Myrtle Beach Pelicans Unveil Bote McBoatface Bobblehead
March 29, 2019 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Playing off the Cubs star who spectacularly burst onto the Wrigley scene in 2018 and the aptly-named internet sensation, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans are giving away a "Bote McBoatface" bobblehead to the first 1,000 fans on Saturday, July 13 as a part of Cubs-A-Palooza at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. The bobblehead giveaway is brought to you by WMBF, 106.5 Nash FM and The Sun News.
David Bote, the Cubs 18th-round pick in the 2012 MLB draft and former Pelican, made his major league debut on April 21, 2018 and rose to national stardom with Chicago. He had a flare for the dramatic, hitting a pair of walk-off homers on the season, including a pinch-hit, walk-off grand slam on August 12 against the Washington Nationals to give the Cubs a 4-3 win.
Bote was a member of the 2016 Pelicans and, in 72 games for Myrtle Beach, he hit .337/.410/.518 with six home runs and 41 RBIs. The power-hitting infielder was named the Carolina League Championship Series MVP after he helped the Birds win the Mills Cup Championship, the Pelicans second-straight Carolina League title. Though he had success at the lower levels of the minor leagues, he was never dubbed a "top prospect" for the Cubs, so his overachievement with the Northsiders quickly made him a fan favorite.
His success with Chicago sent social media into a frenzy, prompting some to call Bote "Bote McBoatface", playing off his last name and the popular 2016 research vessel internet naming contest.
When the National Environmental Research Council allowed the public to vote on a name for the United Kingdom's newest vessel, an online poll decided on "Boaty McBoatface" as the winning entry and the contest received worldwide attention. The NERC eventually overruled the naming of the ship and instead named it after Sir David Attenborough.
For the third-straight season, the Pelicans will host Cubs-A-Palooza on Friday, July 12 and Saturday, July 13. The weekend will kick off with an appearance from baseball-legend Lou Piniella on Friday courtesy of WMBF and Mix 97.7 and will conclude with the "Bote McBoatface" bobblehead giveaway. A limited amount of all-inclusive Cubs-A-Palooza packages are on sale now and available for purchase here or by calling the Pelicans Front Office at 843-918-6000.
The Pelicans' 2019 season kicks off on April 4 against the Lynchburg Hillcats. Season tickets are available now. For more information or to purchase tickets visit myrtlebeachpelicans.com or call 843-918-6000.
