Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Former Myrtle Beach Pelicans outfielder, Eloy Jimenez made his major league debut on Thursday for the Chicago White Sox at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. Jimenez is the 177th Pelicans player to play in the major leagues and the first of 2019 as he was in the White Sox Opening Day lineup, batting fifth and playing left field.

The Dominican Republic native, went 0-for-3 in his major league debut, but recorded his first-career RBI when he was hit by a pitch in the top of the ninth inning with the bases loaded. Jimenez would later come around to score in the inning, but the White Sox fell to the Royals, 5-3.

Originally signed in 2013 by the Chicago Cubs, Jimenez started the 2017 season with the Pelicans and began to dominate the Carolina League. The 20-year-old hit .271/.351/.490 for the Birds before being traded to the Chicago White Sox organization midway through the season.

On July 13, 2017, the Cubs agreed to a deal to send Jimenez, Dylan Cease, Matt Rose and Bryant Flete to the White Sox in exchange for Jose Quintana. At the time of the trade, the Pelicans happened to be playing a series against the Winston-Salem Dash, the Carolina League affiliate of the White Sox. During the middle of the series, Jimenez, Rose and Flete were forced to move from one clubhouse to the other and Jimenez ended up driving in two runs in a 3-2 Dash win in his first game after the deal.

Jimenez finished the 2017 season with the Dash and hit .345/.410/.682 on his way to being named to Baseball America's Minor League All-Star Team.

After his lethal season in 2017, Jimenez opened up 2018 as the No. 6 prospect in all of Baseball according to Baseball America and the No. 4 prospect on MLB.com. He spent the 2018 season in Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte and hit a combined .337/.384/.577.

Prior to the start of the 2019 regular season, Jimenez signed a six-year, $43 million dollar contract to keep him in with the Southsiders through 2026. Entering this season, he is the No. 3 prospect in baseball.

Jimenez is the first former Pelican to make his major league debut this season after seven former Pelicans debuted in 2018.

The Pelicans' 2019 season kicks off on April 4 against the Lynchburg Hillcats. Season tickets are available now. For more information or to purchase tickets visit myrtlebeachpelicans.com or call 843-918-6000.
