ZEBULON, N.C. - Donnie Dewees notched four hits Saturday as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans persevered past the Carolina Mudcats 7-6 in 11 innings at Five County Stadium.
With the score knotted at six, Dewees led off the 11th with a single. David Bote walked and two batters later, the pair executed a double steal. With the infield in, Bryant Flete hit a grounder to first. Carolina (44-75, 15-34) first baseman Isaias Tejeda bobbled the ball, allowing Dewees to score to make it 7-6.
Tanner Murphy and Jordan Edgerton singled to begin the bottom of the 11th before a sacrifice bunt pushed the runners to second and third. Daniel Lewis (2-0) then coaxed a grounder to second with the infield in. Flete fielded and then saw the pinch-runner Ryan Gebhart caught between third and home. Flete raced in to tag him out before Lewis retired Luis Valenzuela on a grounder to first to seal the victory. The right-hander worked 1.2 scoreless frames without any rest for the victory - the Pelicans' 18th in 22 games.
Myrtle Beach (67-53) initially led 2-1 going to the bottom of the eighth. However, Travis Demeritte walked to begin the inning before stealing second and moving to third on a passed ball. Two batters later, Keith Curcio earned a free pass before stealing second. Tanner Murphy then singled in both runners to tilt the game in Carolina's favor at 3-2. Jordan Edgerton followed to increase the advantage to 4-2.
In the top of the ninth, Jesse Hodges walked and Andrew Ely was hit by a pitch to put two immediately on base. However, pinch-hitter Ian Rice flied to left before Charcer Burks fouled out. With the Birds down to their final strike, Dewees drilled a game-tying triple off the wall in center. Bote followed with an RBI single to put Myrtle Beach back in front at 5-4.
However, back-to-back one-out walks by Omar Obregon and Demeritte put the Pelicans in trouble in the bottom of the ninth. Tejeda followed immediately after to re-tie the game on an RBI single to right, sending the contest to extra innings.
Myrtle Beach loaded the bases against Ryan Lawlor (1-4) with one out in the top of the 10th on a Jeffrey Baez double, Hodges intentional walk and Ely single. Rice then came through with a sacrifice fly to put the Birds in front at 6-5.
The Pelicans again could not close the game out. Consecutive one-out singles by Erison Mendez and Luis Valenzuela put two on in the bottom of the frame. The Mudcats called on Braxton Davidson, who tied the game with an RBI double down the right field line. After an intentional pass to Demeritte, Lewis retired Tejeda on a foul out to third before Curcio grounded to short to push the contest into the 11th.
Hodges gave the Birds the initial lead with an RBI single in the second before Burks scored on a double play ball in the sixth to make it 2-0.
Pelicans starter Jeremy Null turned in his third consecutive quality start with one run allowed in six innings. He matched a career-high with seven strikeouts without walking a batter. Carolina's only run against Null came on an Edgerton RBI single in the sixth.
