Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, NC - Tanner Murphy hit a go ahead single in the eighth, Isaias Tejeda had a game tying single in the ninth and Braxton Davidson hit a game tying, pinch hit RBI double in the tenth, but the Mudcats lost a see-saw battle with the Pelicans 7-6 in 11 innings at Five County Stadium on Saturday night.
The loss was Carolina's season high tenth straight and dropped them to 16.0 games out of first in the second half race behind Myrtle Beach (67-52, 31-18).
The Mudcats (44-75, 15-34) trailed the Pelicans 2-0 in the sixth on Saturday night before Jordan Edgerton drove in a run with a two-out RBI double to cut it to 2-1. Edgerton also followed Murphy's go ahead RBI single in the eighth with another RBI double and Carolina managed to come back to take a 4-2 after eight.
Relievers Jimmy Moran and Sean McLaughlin lost Carolina's two run lead in the ninth after the Pelicans rallied back with the three to go ahead 5-4. Donnie Dewees delivered the big blow in the Myrtle Beach ninth with a game tying triple off McLaughlin. The hit came with two outs in the ninth and in a 3-2 count. David Bote followed with a RBI single and the Pelicans led 5-4 in the ninth.
Carolina came back with a RBI hit from Tejeda to tie it again in the ninth, but the Pelicans came back with another go-ahead run in the tenth off reliever Ryan Lawlor. Davidson then tied the game with a pinch hit RBI double in the tenth, but one last run for Myrtle Beach in the eleventh off Lawlor proved to be the difference.
Lawlor took the loss after allowing two runs and three hits over the tenth and eleventh innings. McLaughlin suffered his first blown save after allowing an inherited runner and two other runs to score in the ninth.
Daniel Lewis earned the win after holding the Mudcats scoreless in the eleventh and after leaving one of two inherited runners on base in the tenth.
Murphy was 2-for-6 with a run and two RBI for the Mudcats in the loss. Edgerton was 3-for-6 with two doubles and two RBI and Tejeda was 2-for-6 with one batted in. Davidson came off the bench and collected a hit as a pinch hitter for the first time this season and was 1-for-1 with a RBI double.
Caleb Beech started for the Mudcats and worked through a season high seven innings with just two runs allowed on eight hits. Jeremy Null started on the other side for the Pelicans and gave up just one run on eight hits over six. Scott Effros also pitched for the Pelicans and suffered a blown save in his Myrtle Beach debut after giving up three runs on three hits.
Carolina was 5-for-22 with runners in scoring position in the loss and left 16 men on base. Nine of their 16 were stranded on base over the final four innings of the game.
Myrtle Beach won the series with Saturday's win after taking a two games to none lead in the three game set. The finale is scheduled for Sunday afternoon with the first pitch at 2:00 p.m. in Zebulon. Sunday's game is Superhero Day and will benefit Bob's Buddies.
