Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Mighty Mussels racked up six runs on 14 hits Friday as they surged past the red-hot Clearwater Threshers 6-1 at Hammond Stadium.

Mussels' (29-26) pitching was tremendous, as four pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts while allowing just two walks and one unearned run. Starter Andrew Morris (1-1) was stout as well, fanning seven while allowing three hits over 4.2 innings.

In a scoreless game in the bottom of the third inning, Luis Baez and Dylan Neuse notched back-to-back singles to set up a first-and-second spot with one out. The next hitter was Jorel Ortega, who sent a fly ball to deep right center that hopped to the wall. On the play, Baez scored to make it 1-0, but Neuse was thrown out at the plate. Danny De Andrade proceeded with a ground-ball single to center to score Ortega and give Fort Myers a 2-0 lead.

With the same score in the top of the fifth, Ricardo Rosario tripled on a line drive to deep right field. With the infield drawn in half way, Emaarion Boyd dribbled a ground ball to third. As Rosario took off on contact, Rafael Cruz made an errant throw to home that allowed the run to score and make it 2-1. Develson Aria (2-2) then entered and fanned Gabriel Rincones Jr. to maintain the lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Baez singled and Neuse doubled to place runners at second and third with no outs. After an Ortega ground out, Baez scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 3-1. De Andrade followed with a bloop single to right that scored Neuse to give Fort Myers a three-run lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Mussels loaded the bases after Clearwater (39-15) hit two batters and allowed a single. With Neuse at the plate, Tatum scored on another wild pitch to increase the lead to 5-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, Rubel Cespedes walked and Alex Sayre singled to set up another run-scoring opportunity for the Mussels. With one out, Maddux Houghton looped a soft liner to center that scored Cespedes to push the lead to 6-1.

With the victory, Fort Myers delays the Threshers' impending playoff celebration as their magic number still sits a one game.

The Mussels will start RHP Jose Olivares (2-2, 6.25) Saturday while the Threshers will counter with RHP Alex McFarlane (0-3, 3.65). First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m. at Hammond Stadium with coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. on the Mighty Mussels Baseball Network.
