Madison Capitols News Release
MADISON, WI - In the second game of the weekend series, the Madison Capitols dropped a 5-2 decision to the Muskegon Lumberjacks at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena on Saturday night.
Madison (21-28-2-2) is ranked eighth in the Eastern Conference with 46 points. Muskegon (30-22-1-1) sits in third place in the Eastern Conference with 62 points.
Center Monte Graham gave the Lumberjacks a 3-0 lead with his ninth goal of the season at 19:00 of the first period. Graham received a drop pass from right wing Vincent De Mey on the left circle and beat goaltender Dryden Mckay high on the short side for a shorthanded tally.
Muskegon opened the scoring on a drop pass from DeMey to center Jachym Kondelik at 3:03 of the first period. Kondelik beat McKay high to the glove side for his 12th goal of this season.
The Lumberjacks added to their lead at 12:47 of the opening frame when center Mikael Hakkarainen beat Mckay low to the blocker side. Center Anthony Del Gaizo sent Hakkarainen in on a partial breakaway for his 15th goal.
After a scoreless second period, Del Gaizo scored his league leading 38th goal of the season on another drop pass from left wing Matej Pekar. Del Gaizo sent the snap shot home for a power play goal to increase the lead to 4-0.
At 10:59 of the third period, the Capitols cut into the lead on a slick cross crease pass from center Michael Mancinelli to Capitols captain left wing Mick Messner. The two-on-one conversion was Messner's 16th goal of the year.
Madison continued to claw their way back to make the score 4-2, as left wing Alec Broetzman converted on a great seam pass from Mancinelli. Broetzman's 23rd goal of the season beat netminder Zach Borgiel high to the glove side at 18:38 of the final frame.
Madison pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, but were unable to capitalize. Muskegon made it 5-2 seconds later at 18:53 with an empty-net goal from Graham. The center scored his 10th goal of the season on a clearing attempt that found its way home.
Mckay (18-21-1-2) took his 21st loss of the season stopping 27-of-31 shots. Borgiel (4-2-0-0) earned his fourth win of the season stopping 21-of-23 shots.
Madison went 0-for-2 on the power play. Muskegon was 1-for-2 with the man advantage. Muskegon also added a short-handed goal.
Notables: Center Michael Mancinelli has five points (2-3=5) in his last five contests...Left wing Mick Messner also has five points (3-2=5) in his last five games.
