Muskegon Falls Short to Chicago in 8-5 Loss

MUSKEGON, Mich. - The Muskegon Lumberjacks could not complete the comeback as they dropped an 8-to-5 decision to the Chicago Steel on Saturday, Feb. 26 from Mercy Health Arena in downtown Muskegon. The Lumberjacks received goals from Quinn Hutson, Tyler Dunbar, Joey Larson, and two from Phil Tresca, but Chicago's Sam Lipkin stole the show with four goals in the game to sweep the Muskegon Lumberjacks. With the sweep, the Steel hold a six-point advantage over the Lumberjacks for first place in the Eastern Conference standings.

1st Period

Chicago didn't waste time to get on the board first as Joe Miller scored the game's first goal 32 seconds into the contest. Miller's 17th goal of the season was assisted by Adam Fanitlli and Jackson Blake to make it a 1-to-0 game for the Steel.

The Steel doubled their lead to 2-to-0 with Jack Harvey's 15th goal of the season to make it a 2-to-0 lead for Chicago at 9:20 of the first period. Nick Moldenhauer and Chris Delaney picked up assists on the play.

Sam Lipkin made it a 3-to-0 lead for Chicago at 11:39 of the period with his 22nd of the season. Michael Bianconi earned the lone assist on Lipkin's goal.

Chicago opened it up to a 4-to-0 lead at 14:46 of the period with a goal from Joe Miller, his second of the contest. Adam Fantilli and Jake Livanavage scored assists on Miller's 18th of the season.

The Lumberjacks would get on the scoreboard with a lamplighter from Phil Tresca at 16:18 of the first period. Tresca's 24th of the season was assisted by Joey Larson and Jacob Guevin to make it a 4-to-1 game.

After the first period of action, the Steel controlled a 4-to-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

2nd Period

Quinn Hutson picked up his 99th career point with a goal 40 seconds into the second period to put Muskegon within a pair. Hutson's 26th goal of the season was assisted by Ben Strinden to make it a 4-to-2 game.

The Steel would restore the three-goal advantage at 7:55 with a power play goal from Adam Fantilli to make it a 5-to-3 score. Fantilli's 27th of the season was assisted by Jackson Blake.

The Lumberjacks would get a gimme from Tyler Dunbar 18 seconds later at 8:13 of the second period. Dunbar's third goal of the season was unassisted to put the Jacks within two goals again at 5-to-3.

Muskegon's Joey Larson picked up a power play goal at 10:36 of the period, putting the Jacks within a goal. Jake Richard and Jake Braccini helped on Larson's 23rd goal of the season to make it a 5-to-4 game.

After two periods of play, Muskegon was not out of the woods just yet as they trailed 5-to-4 to Chicago heading into the second intermission.

3rd Period

Sam Lipkin notched his second goal of the game at 4:30 of the period to increase the Chicago lead to 6-to-4. Lipkin's 23rd of the season was assisted by Jackson Blake and Joe Miller.

Lipkin would complete the hat trick at 5:28 of the period with his 24th goal of the season to make it a 7-to-4 lead for Chicago. Jake Livanavage and Chris Delaney picked up assists.

Chicago's Lipkin picked up his fourth goal of the game at 6:55 to increase the cushion to 8-to-4, restoring the first period four-goal lead Chicago had originally built. Lipkin's 25th of the season was assisted by Jackson Blake and Lukas Gustafsson.

At 17:30, Phil Tresca lit the lamp for the second time in the game to make it an 8-to-5 score, still in favor of Chicago. Tresca's 25th goal of the year was assisted by Jack Williams and Joey Larson.

In the end, the Lumberjacks could not complete the comeback and dropped an 8-to-5 decision to the hands of the Chicago Steel.

The Muskegon Lumberjacks head back out on the road to Cedar Rapids, Iowa for a two-game weekend series against the Cedar Rapids RoughRider on Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5, respectively. Both games will start at 8:05 pm EST.
