Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks had their highest-scoring night in more than two years during a 9-2 victory against the Des Moines Buccaneers at Young Arena Saturday.
Of all the goals that were scored, a goal that wasn't proved to be important early. A quick whistle benefitted the Hawks 2:10 into the game; the Buccaneers knocked a puck across the goal line as play was being stopped, wiping out the possible early Bucs score. Instead, the Hawks jumped in front at 6:33. Jake Rozzi was along the end wall and redirected the puck into the slot. Patrick Geary stepped up to find it, whipping a shot past Lucas Szyszka.
Waterloo struck again at 12:32. John Waldron forced a Des Moines turnover below the icing line to create Connor Brown's chance from between the hashmarks at 12:32. Not quite three minutes later, Geary moved to the bottom of the right circle for a sharp-angled chance, tipped in by Mason McCormick for a 3-0 lead at 15:23.
Waterloo's second period was even bigger. It started at 1:39 as Garrett Schifsky sped up the slot and slipped in a backhander. Des Moines answered on a power play at 8:51 when Killian Kiecker-Olson put in a chance from below the right circle.
However, the Hawks put the game out of reach late in the second, during a run that started amidst Des Moines' next power play. Schifsky swiped a puck at the defensive blue line, sending Jake Schneider up the rink to score in transition from the right circle in transition. That chased Szyszka from the game, but Waterloo added two more against Remmington Keopple minutes later.
Jake Rozzi tipped Tyler Proscious' point shot at 15:00. Thirty-two seconds later, Waldron scored on a wrister from the top of the left circle.
The Hawks brought in Jakub Tichy for his first action of the season during the third period. The Czech netminder stopped six of seven shots, beaten only by a chance through traffic by Michael Bevilacqua at 3:48.
Later in the period, Waterloo's final two goals came during a five-minute power play. At 7:09, Ben Robertson rang in a shot off the post on assists by Waldron and Schifsky. All three players would be involved in the scoring of the next goal at 9:27 when Waldron rifled in his second of the night from the left faceoff dot.
The nine-goal effort was the most since Waterloo defeated Des Moines 9-1 at Young Arena on October 19, 2019.
The Hawks' next four games are on the road, starting Tuesday night in Omaha against the Lancers. Next Saturday, Waterloo and Des Moines meet for a rematch at Buccaneer Arena.
