Murphy nabs opening week honors
October 24, 2005 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Rayz veteran forward Randy Murphy made quite an entrance into his Rayz career this weekend, recording two goals and five assists to lead the Central Hockey League with seven points. His efforts apparently went noticed throughout the league as Monday afternoon, the CHL announced Murphy as the CHL Oakley Player of the Week for week #1. Murphy led the Rayz to a 2-0-0 record in back to back wins over the Austin Ice Bats to open up the 2005-2006 season.
Murphy, 33, was signed by the Rayz in the summer and brought a reputation as a big point producer to South Texas. The twelve-year veteran is a three-time 100 points scorer in his career and last season led the New Mexico Scorpions in goals, assists and points (34-37-71). However, even with his reputable credentials, few could have ever predicted that Murphy would explode out of the gate like he did in the opening weekend of the CHL. The 5' 7", 172 lbs. center from Mississauga, Ontario got the Rayz season scoring started as he recorded the first Rayz goal of the season in the first period of Friday night's season-opening game in Austin. He had a game-high four points in that contest and followed it with an encore performance Saturday when he scored a game-high three points.
Murphy centered what was the opening weekend's most productive line in the CHL, teaming up with Shawn Legault and Jason Baird for 18 points between the trio. Including the two pre-season games, Murphy is the only player on the Rayz to score each time the Rayz have taken the ice this year.
Murphy and the Rayz opened up the 2005-2006 season in fine fashion with a pair of wins over the Austin Ice Bats. The Rayz will return to the ice on Sunday afternoon at 5:00pm for the first Caller-Times Family Day Game of the season. Fans can receive two free children tickets with the purchase of every adult priced ticket. Come watch the Rayz as they host the expansion Youngstown (OH) Steelhounds for the first ever meeting between the two clubs. For more information, please contact the Rayz at (361)814-PUCK.
