Oakley CHL Player & Goaltender of the Week Announced
October 24, 2005 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
Corpus Christi forward Randy Murphy and Wichita goaltender Sebastien Laplante, who both led their clubs to consecutive wins during the opening week of Central Hockey League action, have been selected as the recipients of the Oakley Player and Goaltender of the Week awards for Week One. Murphy registered a CHL-leading seven points as Corpus Christi won both ends of a home and home series with Austin, while Laplante turned aside 59 of 63 shots face in Thunder home victories over Odessa and Oklahoma City.
Corpus Christi's Randy Murphy has quickly endeared himself to his teammates and Rayz fans, scoring twice and adding five assists in back to back victories over Southeast rival Austin. At Austin on Friday, October 21st, Murphy scored his first goal of the season and added three assists in a 5-2 win. The following night in Corpus Christi's home opener, he scored three more points off a power play goal and two assists in the Rayz 6-5 victory. Murphy and linemates Jason Baird and Shawn Legault have combined for 18 points in the Rayz opening two games. Last season Murphy, a Mississauga, Ontario native, led New Mexico in goals (34), assists (37) and points (71) prior to signing in Corpus Christi as a free agent this summer.
The new offense-friendly rules implemented by the CHL this season haven't been particularly kind to goaltenders as the season begins, but Wichita's Sebastien Laplante managed to provide exceptional netminding in leading the Thunder to a pair of home wins opening weekend. Laplante turned aside 36 of 38 Odessa shots in a 6-2 win over the Jackalopes on October 21st, then turned aside 23 of 35 Oklahoma City blasts in a 3-2 victory over the Blazers the following night. The 24-year old Laplante joined the Thunder this off-season after recording 30 wins and five shutouts combined during the last two seasons, spent with Florence and Pee Dee of the ECHL.
