Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
OPENING WITH A WIN - On Friday night, the Mudbugs began their ninth season with a 4-3 victory over the Memphis RiverKings at the CenturyTel Center thanks to goals from four different goal scorers and a strong performance from starting goaltender Paul Schonfelder. The win, in front of 7,031 fans, was the Mudbugs' fourth straight season-opening victory. After Memphis scored three straight goals to take their first lead, Jason Campbell scored and Brett Smith capped off a hard-working penalty killing shift by chipping a puck at the side of the Memphis crease to give the Mudbugs the lead back, 4-3. Schonfelder finished the night with 23 saves for his first win of the year.
HAT TRICK WINS IT - Brett Smith scored three goals, including his second shorthanded goal of the year and the overtime game-winner, as the Mudbugs defeated the expansion Youngstown SteelHounds 4-3 on Saturday night in front of 7,227 fans at the CenturyTel Center. The win gives the Mudbugs a 2-0-0 record on the young season and the game marked the return of former head coach Jean Laforest, who is now at the helm of the SteelHounds. The two teams battled into overtime with the SteelHounds killing a penalty which carried over into the extra session. Smith capped off his "first star" night by taking a Blair Manning pass and burying a one-timer at 1:40 for the game-winning goal. Carroll made 14 saves to earn the victory and David St. Germain suffered the loss for Youngstown despite making 33 saves.
