Laplante takes Thunder's first weekly honor

WICHITA, KS- The Thunder picked up where they left off last year, as Sebastien Laplante was named the CHL's first Oakley Goaltender of the Week recipient of the season.

Laplante, who was signed by the Thunder on October 3rd after goaltender Jason Flick announced his retirement, was spectacular in two opening weekend victories. Laplante made 36 saves in a 6-2 victory over the Odessa Jackalopes on Friday, then followed it up with a 23-save performance in a 3-2 win over the Oklahoma City Blazers on Saturday.

A 24-year-old native of Casselman, Ontario, Laplante leads the CHL with a .937 save percentage and ranks second overall with a 2.00 goals against average. A 2001 Draft Pick of the Los Angeles Kings, he also attended NHL training camp with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2002, going 1-0-0 in the preseason. The Thunder took a CHL-best, nine Oakley Player/Goaltender of the Week honors last season.

Laplante, who was also named the first ever Metal Blade Records Thunder Player of the Week (www.metalblade.com), and the rest of the Thunder will get a big test this weekend, facing the Colorado Eagles in a home-and-home series. The Thunder will host the Eagles on Friday at 7:05 p.m., then travel to the Budweiser Events Center for an 8:05 p.m. Central Time face-off with the Eagles. The game will be broadcast live on 98.7 FM KFH. Wichita and Colorado are both off to 2-0-0 starts and are currently tied for first place in the CHL Northwest Division.
