Mudcats top Barons, 4-1

April 11, 2010 - Southern League (SL1)
Carolina Mudcats News Release

Birmingham, AL - Daryl Thompson and two relievers combined on a two-hitter as the Carolina Mudcats remained undefeated to start the Southern League season, defeating the Birmingham Barons for the fourth straight game 4-1 at Regions Park.

The Mudcats (4-0) scored three times in the top of the first thanks to a two-run single by Denis Phipps and a groundout from Brandon Yarbrough. Carolina added another run in the second inning on a single from Kris Negron.

Thompson (W, 1-0), who reached the major leagues with Cincinnati in 2008 before shoulder injuries permeated his career the majority of last season, was extremely effective in his season debut. Thompson needed a double play ball in the first inning, then proceeded to retire 10 straight and work four scoreless innings in 49 pitches. Thompson was relieved in the fifth after allowing three of the first four to reach, but Daryl Harang entered to exit the jam with a 4-1 lead and did not allow a hit in his 3 2/3 inning debut of the season.

Philippe Valiquette pitched a perfect ninth to earn his first save.

Carolina shoots for a season-opening series sweep on Monday night at 8:05 PM ET with Alexander Smit starting against Birmingham's Johnny Lowe.
