Mobile BayBears News Release

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A three-run top of the ninth inning was followed by a two-run bottom of the ninth, and the BayBears fell short to the Montgomery Biscuits on Sunday afternoon, 5-4, at Riverwalk Stadium. The series is now even at two games apiece.

Poor defense provided drama on both sides with the BayBears (2-2) taking advantage of a dropped ball by left field Ryan Royster which opened the door for their three-run ninth. Down 3-1, Cyle Hankerd drilled a ball into the gap that Royster had tip off his glove, allowing Bryan Byrne to score.

After an intentional walk to Taylor Harbin, Jake Elmore bounced a ball fair down the third base line to bring home Konrad Schmidt and Hankerd, putting the BayBears on top against Matthew Gorgen (1-0), who blew the save.

Abe Woody (1-1) let a save chance slip as well in the bottom of the ninth when he surrendered a two-out single to Shawn O'Malley and then a two-strike RBI double to Emeel Salem. Cody Strait bounced a ball down the third base line that Harbin gloved but his throw to first sailed over Byrne's head and scored Salem for the game-winner.

Both starters threw the ball with Bryan Shaw looking sharp in his BayBear debut as he fanned six over five frames. His only blemishes came in the second when he coughed up two runs on four hits as Chris De La Cruz and O'Malley knocked in runs.

David Newmann was incredible for the Biscuits (2-2) with a seven-inning, five-hit, no-run performance. He fanned four and walked nobody while only using 65 (45 strikes) to get through seven.

The BayBears send right-hander Barry Enright to the hill on Monday night in Montgomery as they take on the Biscuits in thefinale of their five-game set at 7:05. They return to Mobile for the home opener at Hank Aaron Stadium on Wednesday night at 7:05 when they open the Hank Aaron Childhood Home & Museum. Baseball Hall of Famers Hank Aaron, Ozzie Smith, Rickey Henderson, Bob Feller, Bruce Sutter and Willie Mays will be in attendance among many other baseball dignitaries. For tickets, which start at $5 for kids and $7 for adults, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
