Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, NC --- The two first place teams vying for the post-season split a pair of games at Five County Stadium on Thursday night with Mississippi and Carolina dividing a doubleheader by identical 9-3 scores.

In the opener, John Raynor reached all five plate appearances, scoring a pair and driving in two to lead the Mudcats (37-22) to the opening win. Nick McCurdy worked four scoreless innings on just one hit in his Carolina debut. McCurdy started Wednesday night's game, working an inning, but resumed Thursday night after rain suspended the game 24 hours earlier. Tim Wood (W, 2-1) notched the victory in relief.

In the nightcap, former North Carolina Tar Heel Andrew Miller started for Carolina on a major league rehab for the Florida Marlins, pitching into the sixth inning before departing in the sixth with a 4-2 lead. However, closer Chris Mobley (L, 4-3) struggled in permitting seven runs over 2/3 of an inning to take the loss. Mississippi (35-24) scored three in the sixth, then put the game away with five in the seventh.

In a battle of second-place teams, Tennessee edged Montgomery 2-1. The Smokies trail Carolina in the North by seven games with 11 to play, while Montgomery is 2 1/2 behind Mississippi. Carolina's magic number to clinching the North is at five heading into Friday night's series finale.

Brett Sinkbeil starts opposite Kris Medlen at 7:15 PM ET.
