Carolina Mudcats News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Omar Obregon stretched his hitting streak to 13 straight games with a two-run double in the second and Braxton Davidson homered for the first time this season while driving in two runs as the Mudcats snapped a six game losing streak with a 6-3 rain shortened victory in Myrtle Beach against the Pelicans on Friday night.
The Mudcats (7-9) rallied for two early runs with back-to-back, two-out, RBI doubles from Jordan Edgerton and Davidson in the first while taking a 2-0 lead against Erick Leal and the Pelicans (8-8).
The Pelicans answered back with two runs in the bottom of the first to tie it, but Obregon put the Mudcats up again with a two-run double in the second and Carolina led 4-3 after two at TicketReturn.Com Field.
Obregon's double in the second brought his hitting streak to a career best 13 straight games and matched the longest streak in the Carolina League this season. The double was the third collected by Carolina over the first two innings.
Edgerton had a first inning RBI double and was 1-for-3 in the game. Davidson was 2-for-4 with a first inning RBI double and a solo home run in the eighth. Davidson's home run was his first of the season and went to straightaway left.
The Mudcats scored four runs over the first two innings and collected all four on four hits against Leal (2-1). The Myrtle Beach starter left in the second with four hits, four runs and four walks allowed. Leal took the loss after pitching through just an inning and 2/3 pitched. Tyler Ihrig pitched the next four and 2/3 innings and held the Mudcats without a hit. He did allow an unearned run and finished with two walks and two strikeouts.
Enderson Franco started for Carolina and pitched through the fifth while earning his first win of the season. He allowed three runs over the first two innings, but kept the Pelicans quiet over the next three. Franco (1-1) walked two, struck out three and allowed seven hits in the victory.
Reliever Zack Bird entered the game in the sixth in place of Franco and worked through a scoreless inning before having to leave partway through the seventh. Bird left the game with two men on and one out in the seventh. Evan Phillips then entered and managed to finish the inning unscathed after retiring two straight..
Bird walked three, struck out one and kept the Pelicans scoreless over one and 1/3 innings. Phillips (S, 2) stranded two inherited runners, struck out one and pitched to a batter in the eighth before the game was called.
The win snapped Carolina's six game losing streak and evened their four game series with the Pelicans at 1-1. The third game of the four game set is scheduled for Saturday night with the first pitch at 7:05 p.m. in Myrtle Beach. LHP Ryan Lawlor will get the start for the Mudcats; while RHP Jake Stinnett starts for the Pelicans.
