Frederick Keys News Release
Lynchburg, VA - The Lynchburg Hillcats rode a seven-run second frame en route to an 8-5 win over the Keys on Friday night at Calvin Falwell Field. Frederick reliever Luis Gonzalez struck out seven in three scoreless innings to stay within striking distance, but it wasn't enough as the Keys dropped to 5-11 on the season.
After a 48-minute rain delay, the Hillcats kicked off the scoring in a big way in the second frame. Keys started Mitch Horacek needed 44 pitches to get out of the inning, while 11 men were sent to bat. Dorsyss Paulino and Mike Papi singled before Claudio Bautista struck out. Daniel Salters and Ivan Castillo followed with RBI singles to make it 2-0. Greg Allen reached on a bunt to load the bases, which brought up Yu-Cheng Chang.
Chang grounded a ball to the shortstop, who threw to second to start a double play, but the ball was dropped for the first error of the inning. Anthony Santander walked with the bases loaded to make it 4-0, while Bobby Bradley grounded out for a five-run lead. Another Keys error scored two more, leading to four unearned runs in the inning against Horacek. The lefty tossed just three innings, allowed seven hits and seven runs (three earned) in the loss.
The Keys would scrape runs back in the later innings against Justus Sheffield and Jordan Milbrath. Sheffield went five innings, gave up two runs on three hits and punched out six in the winning effort. In the fourth, an RBI double by Jomar Reyes plated Aderlin Rodriguez cut the deficit to 7-1.
Steve Wilkerson led off the sixth with an infield single to knock Sheffield out. Milbrath replaced the starter, allowed Wilkerson to score on an RBI groundout by Rodriguez, and then gave up a run on an RBI grounder by Reyes for a 7-3 game.
The Keys got great bullpen work by Gonzalez, who lasted three innings for the second straight relief appearance. The southpaw gave up just one hit and struck out seven, tied for the most he has whiffed in his Keys career.
In the eighth, Milbrath served up two, two-out singles to Rodriguez and Reyes before being replaced by Trevor Frank. Austin Wynns sliced a two-run double to the alley in right to get the Keys to within two runs, but that was the closest they would get. The Hillcats added an insurance run in the eighth against Jimmy Yacabonis and Frank closed it out in the ninth for his fourth save. The Keys are back in action Saturday night at 6:30 for the third game of the series. RHP Lucas Long (0-0, 0.00) is slated to make his Keys debut against RHP Mitch Brown (0-1, 7.43). The broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com.
