Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, NC - The Carolina Mudcats scored four runs in the last of the ninth inning, but it wasn't enough in a 5-4 setback to the Salem Red Sox in front of 1,076 on Wednesday night at Five County Stadium.
The Mudcats drop to 20-18 while the Red Sox climb to 21-15.
Jake Lowery began the late surge with a double against reliever Andrew Jones off the right field wall. The Mudcats followed with a single from Ronny Rodriguez and a double by Anthony Gallas to Carolina on the board. Tyler Cannon reached on a fielding error to plate another run.
Still no one out, Tyler Holt singled in a third run. Jones settled down enough to strike out a pair before Jesus Aguilar cut the deficit to one with a single through the left side. With the tying run at third, Jeremie Tice flew out to deep right to end the game.
The comeback nearly spoiled a dominant outing for Salem starter Ryan Pressly (3-1). The right-hander held the Mudcats off the board for seven innings. He scattered four hits and fanned eight.
Will Roberts (1-2) takes the loss for the Mudcats after allowing three runs over four-and-two-thirds innings.
Salem slowly pulled away in the game, scoring first on a wild pitch in the fourth inning. In the fifth, the Red Sox put together three straight two-out hits to expand the lead to 3-0.
The Red Sox finished off their scoring with run-producing singles in seventh and ninth.
The Carolina Mudcats finish their series with Salem on Thursday night at 7:15 p.m. Carolina goes on the road for seven days beginning with a three game series against the Potomac Nationals on Friday.
