Carolina Mudcats News Release
Jackson, TN --- Graham Taylor won his first Double-A game as the Carolina Mudcats defeated the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx 4-3 at Pringles Park before 1,179 fans on Thursday night.
Carolina reduced its magic number to clinching the Northern Division to 10, compliments of Carolina's win coupled with Tennessee's loss to Birmingham.
Taylor (W, 1-0) worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs and whiffed five en route to his 12th victory of the season. Taylor earned 11 wins at High-A Jupiter over 22 starts. Carolina (34-19) scored runs in the first two innings against former Mudcats starter Gaby Hernandez (L, 3-1). Hernandez was traded from Florida to Seattle on July 31st and made two starts for West Tenn before facing the Mudcats on Thursday night. Hernandez allowed the first four hitters of the game to reach, with a Chris Coghlan single driving in the first run of the game, however Hernandez fanned Cameron Maybin and induced a double play from Andy Jenkins to exit the jam.
Brad Davis singled home Chris DeLaCruz in the second, then scored in the fifth on a double by Manuel Mayorson for a 3-0 lead.
West Tenn (22-30) scored an unearned run in the fifth against Taylor, then two against Taylor in the sixth before Todd Doolittle relieved Taylor with a 4-3 lead and the tying run at second.
The Mudcats bullpen was perfect, retiring all 11 Diamond Jaxx hitters, seven on strikes. Chris Mobley (S, 24) notched his second save of the series, working a perfect ninth.
Aaron Thompson (1-3, 5.51) starts the series' fourth game on Friday night against Luis Munoz (0-0, 7.36) at 8:05 PM ET.
