Carolina Mudcats News Release
Chattanooga, TN --- The Carolina Mudcats threw out two would-be tying runs at the plate in the last of the ninth to secure a 7-6 victory over the Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field, ending a five-game losing streak.
After a leadoff double by Ramon Nivar, Josh Bell singled down the left field line, but Todd Frazier cut off the hit on his backhand side and threw out Nivar at the plate to protect the lead, with Bell taking second. A wild pitch followed, then on a 3-1 delivery from Logan Ondrusek (S, 2), catcher Brian Peterson blocked a pitch in the dirt up the first base dirt, scrambled to retrieve as Bell attempted to score. Ondrusek caught Peterson's underhand toss and tagged Bell just before reaching home. Andrew Lambo grounded out to a sliding Jose Castro at second base to end the game.
Carolina (2-6) spotted the Lookouts (3-5) a 3-0 lead after an inning, but the Mudcats scored twice in the second inning, building a rally after two were out. Zack Cozart doubled and scored on a single to center by Castro. Peterson, playing in his first game with Carolina, doubled up the right-centerfield alley to score Castro to trim the deficit to 3-2. Chattanooga scored another run against starter Camilo Vazquez in the second before the Mudcats tied the game in the third. Juan Francisco and Logan Parker chipped in RBI doubles to tie the game 4-4.
After the Lookouts went ahead with a fourth inning run, Michael Griffin tied the game with a leadoff homer in the fifth, then the Mudcats went ahead for the first time in the game on a two-out, two-strike single to center by Peterson with the bases loaded.
Steve Otterness (W, 1-0) earned the win in his Double-A debut. Otterness, who was called up from Low-A Dayton earlier in the day, pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Otterness left in the eighth after an error, walk and sacrifice, but Phillippe Valiquette pitched through the inning. Valiquette built his own trouble in the eighth as the Lookouts loaded the bases with none out, but Valiquette fanned a hitter before being relieved by Ondrusek, who struck out the next two hitters to end the inning. The Lookouts managed to score a run before the inning ended on a wild pitch.
Tom Cochran (1-0, 3.00) starts the third of a six-game series on Tuesday night against Alberto Bastardo (0-1, 16.87) at 7:15 PM ET.
