Mudcats Drop Back to First Place Tie

Zebulon, NC --- Papo Bolivar had three hits, including a two-run double in the third inning as Tennessee regained a share of the Eastern lead with a 7-4 victory over the Carolina Mudcats on Tuesday night at Five County Stadium.

The Smokies (34-29), who broke a four-game losing skid, scored a first-inning run against Donnie Bridges (L, 10-2, 4IP, 5H, 5R, 5ER, 2W, 0K) on a single by Bucky Jacobsen. In the third, Bridges allowed a leadoff double to Corey Erickson, then walked two batters after a sacrifice ahead of Bolivar's double off the left field wall. Yadier Molina drilled a two-run single later in the inning as Tennessee went ahead 5-0.

The Mudcats (33-28) scored a run in the fifth on a grounder by Jesus Medrano (0-4, RBI, W), then put three on the board in the sixth against Josh Axelson. Matt Padgett (HR, 17, 2-4, RBI) blasted his 17th homer to begin the inning, then later Chip Ambres (2-3, 2R, 3B, RBI, W) tripled in a run and scored on a double by Brandon Harper (1-4, 2B, RBI).

Bridges worked only four innings, and netted his first loss since May 13th, spanning 17 appearances. Bridges threw 60 pitches, and left the game with arm soreness.

Axelson (W, 4-2) allowed four runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings, and earned his second win in four appearances against Carolina.

Carolina has nine games remaining in the second half, while Tennessee plays six.

The series' third game will feature Nic Ungs (2-4, 3.94) against Tennessee LH Chris Narveson (4-2, 3.20) at 7:15 PM ET Wednesday night.
