Mudcats come up short in Jacksonville

Jacksonville, FL- James Loney singled home Derek Michaelis with two outs in the 11th inning as Jacksonville edged Carolina 4-3 before 7,349 fans at the Baseball Grounds in Jacksonville.

Loney's hit came off of a 1-1 fastball from Randy Messenger (L, 6-1) to end the 3-hour, 44-minute affair. Michaelis reached on a leadoff, four-pitch walk, then moved to second on a two-out hit by Willy Aybar. Loney followed with the low liner toward right-centerfield on which the Mudcats unable to throw to the plate.

Carolina (2-5) took its only lead of the game on a two-out single by Jeff Inglin in the eighth inning, scoring Billy Hall. The Mudcats ralled from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1.

In the bottom of the eighth, reliever Mike Flannery allowed the Suns (3-4) to tie the game. Flannery permitted a single on a two-strike pitch to Nelson Castro, then threw errantly to first base sending Castro first to third. Flannery then committed a balk to score Castro to tie the game.

Bill Murphy started his 16th game for the Mudcats, working five innings, allowing five hits and two runs. Murphy walked four and struck out seven, reclaiming his Southern League lead with 100 in 85 2/3 innings.

Carolina finished its second-half opening road trip 2-5, and opens a seven-game homestand Wednesday night against the unbeaten Chattanooga Lookouts at 7:15 PM ET.
