G-Braves Place Four in SL All-Star Game
June 29, 2004 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
The Southern League has announced that four Greenville Braves have been honored as mid-season All-Stars. Pitchers Jamie Emiliano and Dan Meyer, utility man Napoleon Calzado and outfielder Billy McCarthy have all been selected to play for the Eastern Division team in the July 13th SL All-Star Game at BellSouth Park in Chattanooga. Meyer and McCarthy, who were promoted to "AAA" Richmond last week, will be replaced on the East roster in the coming days.
CALZADO, who was acquired by Atlanta from Baltimore in a mid-April trade for a player to be named later, was named to the squad as a utility player. The Dominican Republic native is presently second in the Southern League in batting at .346 with four home runs and 35 RBI. Calzado has hit safely in 18 of his last 19 games and is batting a sizzling .395 in the month of June.
EMILIANO will be playing in the SL Classic for the second time as he represented the G-Braves in 2002. The righthander from Andrews, Texas, owns a 2-0 record with 4 saves and a 1.08 ERA in 26 relief outings. Emiliano has not allowed an earned run in 24 of his appearances this season and is a perfect 4-for-4 in converting his save opportunities. He signed with Atlanta prior to the 2002 season as a six-year minor league free agent after beginning his career in the Rockies organization.
MEYER was ranked third in the SL in both strikeouts and earned run average when he was promoted to Richmond on June 26th. In 14 appearances for Greenville, the lefthander from Mickleton, New Jersey, went 6-3 with a 2.22 ERA. He posted an impressive 86 strikeouts over 65 innings while allowing just 12 walks. Meyer was drafted by the Braves in the second round in 2002 out of James Madison University.
McCARTHY also played the SL All-Star Game in 2003. When promoted to Richmond on June 26th, the outfielder was leading Greenville with 42 RBI and was second on the club with nine home runs. His .300 batting average in 67 games played has him on pace to maintain or improve his lifetime .290 minor league average. McCarthy was Atlanta's sixth round pick in 2001 out of Rutgers University.
