Knoxville Smokies News Release

Sevierville, TN - The Southern League has announced that three Tennessee Smokies have been selected as mid-season All-Stars. Pitchers Jeremy Cummings and Carmen Cali as well as outfielder Skip Schumaker have all been chosen to play for the Eastern Division team in the July 13th SL All-Star Game at BellSouth Park in Chattanooga. Cummings had surgery on his non-throwing hand last week, and is likely to miss the opportunity.

JEREMY CUMMINGS went 5-1 with a 3.30 era through the first-half. He threw the Smokies' first complete game of the season in a 7-2 win against Montgomery on April 30. Cummings also pitched a complete game shutout in a rain-shortened (7 innings) 9-0 victory over Carolina on June 11th. Only one batter reached second base in that game. Cummings, the Cardinals' 21st round pick from West Virginia University in the 1999 draft, opened the season strong by going 2-0 with a 2.05 ERA in April.

CARMEN CALI took over the closer's role from Evan Rust in June. He earned his first win of the year by pitching 2 1/3 innings and striking out five at Chattanooga on May 30. He has recorded eight saves since June 2. Cali had a run of eight straight appearances (10 1/3 innings) where he did not allow a run from May 22 - June 8. Cali, the Cardinals' 10th round pick from Florida Atlantic University in the 2000 draft, is 1-1 with a 2.87 ERA and eight saves out of Tennessee's bullpen.

SKIP SCHUMAKER opened the season with a ten game hitting streak where he went 20-43 over that span. He hit .345 for the month of April, including a game against Birmingham on April 21 when he stroked 2 triples. Schumaker also had a big game during the first-half pennant run against Jacksonville on June 18. He went 4-4 in the victory and has also had three hits in a game numerous times in the first-half. Schumaker, the Cardinals' 5th round pick from the University of California-Santa Barbara, is hitting .293 on the season and has hit .326 in the month of June.
