Carolina Mudcats News Release

Woodbridge, Va. - The Carolina Mudcats allowed two unearned runs, and another on a bases-loaded hit batter, in a 5-1 loss to the Potomac Nationals on Friday night at Pfitzner Stadium. The Mudcats start the second half 0-1, and are 22-49 overall. The Nationals improve to 43-27 on the year, and 1-0 in the second half.

Taylor Hill (6-2) tossed a gem in the victory, holding Carolina to one run over seven innings. He scattered five hits, and recorded one strikeout.

Shawn Morimando (4-7) suffered a tough loss for the Mudcats, allowing four runs on five hits over 5.1 innings. Two of the runners charged to his line were inherited runners that scored. The left-hander finished with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Mudcats jumped out front in the second inning when Jordan Smith launched a towering drive over the high wall beyond right field. The solo blast was Smith's second of the year.

Potomac tied the score 1-1 in the fourth. Michael Taylor started the frame with a single, and moved to third on a fielding error by first baseman Jerrud Sabourin. A wild pitch by Morimando scored Taylor for an unearned run.

The P-Nats surged ahead in the sixth against the Carolina bullpen. An RBI-single by Adrian Sanchez drove in Jason Martinson for a 2-1 lead. Kevin Keyes was tagged out trying to score on a grounder to first for the second out. A walk to Cole Leonida loaded the bases, and Justin Miller scored when a pitch from Francisco Jimenez struck Randolph Oduber.

Billy Burns followed with a bunt single for a 4-1 lead that capped the frame.

Potomac added one more run against Rob Nixon in the seventh. It was Taylor, again, who started the inning with a single. An error on Francisco Lindor moved Taylor to third, and he scored one batter later on a double play.

The Mudcats continued their weekend series in Potomac on Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. The Mudcats return home on June 24th for a four-game series with the Frederick Keys. Tickets are available by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
