
Nationals Fry the Mudcats 5-1 in Second Half Opener

Woodbridge, VA- The Potomac Nationals (43-27, 1-0) began the second half of the 2013 season on the right foot with a 5-1 victory over the Carolina Mudcats (22-49, 0-1) at Pfitzner Stadium on Friday evening.
Potomac RHP Taylor Hill (6-2), the winning pitcher was stellar through 7.0 stanzas as he allowed one earned run on five separated base hits with no walks and one strikeout.
Hill has now allowed just two earned runs in his last 28.2 innings pitched and is undefeated in 10 appearances and nine starts at home. Hill is (4-0) with a 2.89 earned run average pitching in front of the P-Nats faithful at Pfitzner Stadium.
The lone run for the Mudcats came on a solo home run off the bat of RF Jordan Smith in the 2nd inning, a deep blast over all three tiers of signage. The jack for Smith was his second homer of the season and put Carolina up 1-0.
The Nationals countered with one run in the 4th frame as Carolina LHP Shawn Morimando (4-7), the losing pitcher, slung a wild pitch to the backstop allowing CF Michael Taylor, who singled, to score and tie the contest at 1-1.
Morimando surrendered four runs, three earned, on five hits while walking two and fanning a pair.
Potomac struck for a three-run 6th to take a 4-1 advantage as 2B Adrian Sanchez rifled an RBI single through the right side of the infield before DH Randolph Oduber was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to garner an RBI, and LF Billy Burns dropped an run scoring bunt single.
The P-Nats poured on one more run in the 7th via a double play ball off the stick of 1B Kevin Keyes.
Nationals RHP Richie Mirowski dealt a pair of scoreless innings and allowed just one hit, a double in the 9th to SS Francisco Lindor, before shutting the door by inducing a groundout by DH Bo Greenwell.
Saturday night will bring Potomac RHP Ivan Pineyro (0-0, 0.00) to the mound to make his Carolina League debut against Carolina RHP Michael Peoples (0-2, 6.35).
On Saturday night at Pfitzner Stadium, a 6:35pm game, with gates opening at 5:00pm, the best fireworks show in Northern Virginia will light up the sky post-game and the first 1,000 kids through the gates at The Pfitz will receive a youth glove presented by: Sentara. On Sunday, a 6:05pm start, with gates opening at 5:00pm, Military Appreciation Night will give back to community military members, Kids Eat Free courtesy of: Little Caesars Team Dumfries & Haymarket, and post-game fireworks will again dazzle the Nationals faithful.
