Frederick Keys News Release
By Mike Mueller / Frederick Keys FREDERICK, Md. - Myrtle Beach jumped out to an early 3-0 lead Friday night at Harry Grove Stadium and the Frederick Keys were never able to recover. The Pelicans beat the Keys 7-3 on the first night of the second half of the season for both teams.
It only took Myrtle Beach (1-0, 41-29) two batters to get on the board Friday night. Luis Sardinas led off the game with a single to left field that was booted by Johnny Ruettiger, allowing the Pelicans' speedy shortstop to advance to second. Drew Robinson then singled him home.
Myrtle Beach scored two more times in the first inning, the second run scoring on a wild-pitch strikeout followed by a throwing error by catcher Michael Ohlman and the third on Joe Maloney's one-out single to left field.
The Keys (0-1, 34-36) brought the score to 3-1 when Jason Esposito blooped a single to center field, scoring Michael Ohlman, who tripled on a misplayed fly ball to right-center.
But Myrtle Beach got to Keys starter Zach Petersime for two runs in the fourth and then added two more against Miguel Chalas in the fifth. Robinson doubled home a run in the fourth to put the Pelicans ahead 4-1 and then Rougned Odor's RBI groundout made the score 5-1. Joe Maloney scored on Preston Beck's sacrifice fly in the fifth and Jake Skole's two-out RBI double put Myrtle Beach ahead by six.
Petersime (2-7) lost his seventh game of the season, allowing five runs, four earned, over 3.2 innings. He allowed six hits and walked four.
Michael Ohlman hit his second triple of the game in the sixth, a fly ball to center field that Skole lost in the lights, and drove in Jerome Pena. Ohlman then scored on a wild pitch, pulling Frederick within four runs at 7-3.
Pelicans starter Jerad Eickhoff left the game following the sixth, having allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four. He earned the win, improving to 6-3 on the season.
The Keys brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh and ninth innings in the form of Nicky Delmonico, but with two outs and the bases loaded, he was unable to drive in a run. He grounded out weakly in his first bases-loaded opportunity and then flew out to the warning track in left field to end the game.
David Walters and Tommy Winegardner each pitched a pair of scoreless innings in relief for the Keys and Will Lamb and Randol Rojas combined for three scoreless for Myrtle Beach. Ohlman finished 2-for-4 and now has four triples on the season. Glynn Davis went 2-for-4 for Frederick in his return from the disabled list. Four Pelicans tallied two-hit games, including Robinson, who finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two walks.
The Keys and Pelicans continue their three-game series Saturday night at 6 p.m. at Harry Grove Stadium. Left-handers Tim Berry and Victor Payano will start for the Keys and Pelicans, respectively.
