Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - Members of the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs have appeared at area schools in recent weeks to teach ball hockey physical education classes as part of the Circle K "Students Need Goals" program. The program has already seen Mudbugs players and staff members work with over 1,200 kids in the Bossier-Shreveport area this year.
The Mudbugs and Circle K have teamed up to bring the team into local schools, where players can serve as positive role models while working directly with kids. The presence of Mudbugs players helps promote the importance of physical activity and staying in school while introducing students to a fun sport like hockey.
"They're having a blast out there," said Head Coach Scott Muscutt. "Even though we've had hockey here for awhile now, hockey in P.E. class is still something new for the kids. It's good exercise, puts a smile on their faces, and it's fun when professional athletes take the time to visit them. Those are just a few of the things that make this program successful."
Presenting sponsor Circle K purchases the ball hockey equipment, which is then donated to each school after the "Students Need Goals" program has ended. Earlier this week the Mudbugs spent three full days teaching classes at Apollo Elementary School in Bossier City and have also visited Calvary Baptist Academy in Shreveport.
"These kids were hockey crazy for the three days we were here," said Mudbugs General Manager Jason Campbell, who spent much of the week at Apollo. "It's refreshing to go into these schools to see the kids cheering for each other and getting into it. Circle K provided us the opportunity to get out in these schools, and because of them we're able to leave the equipment behind for the kids to use in the future."
Other local schools are currently in the planning phases for bringing the "Students need Goals" program to their P.E. classes. Available slots are filling up fast, so if your school is interested in the program, please contact Jason Campbell in the team office at 752-BUGS (2847) or soupy@mudbugshockey.com.
"The kids have never done anything like that at school before," Apollo physical education teacher Marliese Lottinger said. "For a lot of them it's probably a once-in-a-lifetime chance to learn from professional athletes. They all had so much fun, and even kids who normally don't participate as much couldn't wait to get out there. When they saw the hockey stuff set up in the gym they were really excited that the Mudbugs were back."
Campbell also says the program is just another way for the Mudbugs to connect with kids and give back to the community.
"We just want people to know that we're here for them," Campbell remarked. "The Mudbugs are here to work with and for this community in any way we can. That is rewarding for us. One of our biggest goals is to make a lasting positive impact whenever we work with kids."
