Mud Hens Walk Off with 3-2 Win over Chiefs

Toledo, Ohio - In game three of a four game series, the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals lost 3-2 to the Toledo Mud Hens on Thursday night. The game was tied going into the ninth, but Josh Wilkie walked home the winning run to give Toledo the victory.

The Mud Hens (13-9) scored first with one run in the second inning. Jeff Larish grounded out to start the frame, but back to back doubles by Jeff Frazier and Deik Scram gave Toledo a 1-0 lead. The Chiefs answered back in the top of the third scoring on a Josh Whitesell fielders choice ground ball.

Chiefs starting pitcher Jeff Mandel held the Mud Hens to one run through 5 1/3 innings surrendering four hits, walking two and striking out two. Chiefs pitchers would combine to hold Toledo scoreless again until the eighth inning.

The Syracuse (13-8) bats struck again in the sixth when Pete Orr was hit by a pitch to get on base and then knocked in by Seth Bynum. However the Chiefs would not score again.

Toledo rallied back with one run in the eighth with Atahualpa Severino pitching. Then in the ninth, Josh Wilkie came on to pitch for Syracuse. He gave up a double to Robinzon Diaz, and then intentionally walked Will Rhymes to try and set up a double play. Danny worth then struck out for the first out of the bottom of the ninth inning. However Casper Wells reached on an error by Chiefs third baseman Chase Lambin and the bases were loaded.

Wilkie worked to a full count on Jeff Larish with the bases loaded, but on a full count, threw ball four and Toledo took a one run victory.

On Friday, the Chiefs and Mud Hens play game four of the series. Andrew Kown (0-2,1.93) will start for Syracuse and Armando Galarraga (3-1, 2.22) will start for Toledo. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
