Jones' 3-Run HR Sparks G-Braves in 6-1 Win over Norfolk

The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves defeated the Norfolk Tides 6-1 on Thursday night at Coolray Field. G-Braves right fielder Mitch Jones blasted his second home run of the year while center fielder Gregor Blanco and first baseman Freddie Freeman both had an RBI. Gwinnett (10-12) is now alone in second place in the International League South division and is 5 games behind first-place Durham. Norfolk (9-13) drops to third place in the IL South.

It Was Over When: In the bottom of the 4th inning with the G-Braves down 1-0, Jones hit his first home run at Coolray Field, a 3-run shot to left field that put the home team on top, 3-1. Norfolk never regained the lead.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Starter Chris Resop (2-1) earned his second victory on the year. He struck out 8 Tides batters while allowing only 1 R/ER on 3 hits in 6.0 IP. Michael Dunn had a strikeout in his one inning of work. Craig Kimbrel allowed only 1 hit in 2.0 IP.

At the plate: Jones went 1-for-4 with 3 RBI and a run scored. Freeman went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Blanco went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Catcher Clint Sammons went 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Starter Jake Arrieta (2-1) was handed his first loss of the season. He gave up 4 runs (3 ER) on 5 hits in 6.0 IP.

At the plate: Third baseman Scott Moore went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Second baseman Justin Turner went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

On Deck: Gwinnett hosts Norfolk in the final game of a four-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Coolray Field. G-Braves RHP Todd Redmond (2-2, 3.55 ERA) is scheduled to face RHP Brad Bergesen (1-0, 2.57 ERA) of the Tides.
