April 22, 2011 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
TOLEDO, Ohio -- Mud Hens left fielder Timo Perez collected three hits and 1B Ryan Strieby drove in two runs, while starting pitcher Duane Below and reliever Zach Simons each had strong performances to lead Toledo to a 7-1 defeat of the Indianapolis Indians on Friday night at Fifth Third Field.
With the loss the Indians fall to 5-11 in the 2011 campaign, while Toledo improved their record to 6-10 to move into sole possession of third place in the International League West Division. The victory also gave the Mud Hens a 2-2 series split with the Indians in the first road series between the two foes at Toledo's home field.
Below (6.1 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO) earned his first victory of the season after surrendering just one earned run on six hits, adding six strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work, while Simons (2.2 IP, 3 BB, 3 SO) provided 2.2 scoreless frames of relief, allowing no hits and three walks.
Indians LHP Rudy Owens (5.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 7 K) suffered his first loss of the season after giving up four earned runs on seven hits, despite striking out seven in his five innings of work.
For the third straight game of the series, Toledo brought runs across in the first frame, after LF Andy Dirks singled, moved to second on Perez's single, and scored on Strieby's RBI single. Perez would come home later in the inning on RF Clete Thomas' sacrifice fly to left to give the Mud Hens the early 2-0 lead.
Strieby would tally his second RBI of the contest in the third with a double to right that scored Perez to push the Toledo advantage to 3-0. DH Danny Worth tripled in the following frame and scored on a wild pitch to increase the Indians' deficit to four.
Indianapolis got a run back in the sixth when SS Chase d'Arnaud led off the inning with a solo shot to left to make the score 4-1. The long ball was the first of the season and at the Triple-A level for the California native.
Toledo answered right back with three runs in the next half inning courtesy of a two-run single from 2B Scott Sizemore that plated 3B Argenis Diaz and Worth, who both drew bases on balls. Dirks, who also drew a free pass, scored later in the frame on an Indians defensive miscue to give the Mud Hens a 7-1 lead.
The Indians now head to Columbus for a three game series against the Clippers starting on Saturday night at 4:05 p.m. Tribe LHP Brian Burres is scheduled to take the mound for Indianapolis while Columbus is expected to counter with RHP Corey Kluber.
The contest will be carried on WNDE 1260 AM, WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show begins at 3:45 p.m.
