Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the New Bedford Bay Sox, 8-6, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action Recreation Field on Tuesday night.
With the win, Vermont improves to 16-13 on the summer. New Bedford drops to 15-14 overall.
The game began at 8:12 p.m. following a one hour and 42 minute rain delay. Vermont starter Sean Leland (Orland Park, Ill. / Louisville), who warmed up on and off three separate times, struggled in the first inning. New Bedford scored three runs to take an immediate 3-0 lead. Leland bounced back and lasted five and one third innings, giving up five runs total (all earned) on six hits and two walks. He struck out a season-high 12 and took a no decision.
The Mountaineers offense was dormant early on, but erupted for five runs in the third inning to take a 5-3 advantage. Rightfielder Riley Jackson (Lexington, Ky. / Louisville) led off the frame with a single and stole second. Catcher Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla. / Maine Orono) followed with a single before centerfielder Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla. / Eastern Michigan) walked to load the bases. Leftfielder Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) drew an RBI walk to score Jackson and make it 3-1 Bay Sox. Second baseman Devin Hairston (Lexington, Ky. / Louisville) then smacked a bases clearing three RBI double to provide Vermont with a 4-3 lead. Three batters later, designated hitter Isaiah Pasteur (Westminster, Md. / Indiana) hit an RBI single to score Hairston and make it 5-3 Mountaineers.
New Bedford tied the game at five in the fifth inning with two runs, but Vermont scored once in the seventh courtesy of an RBI knock by Pasteur to give Vermont a 6-5 edge.
The Mountaineers also pushed two runs across in the eighth. First baseman Austin Taylor (Friendship, Tenn. / Tennessee Martin) connected with a solo homerun. Four batters later, Parenty ripped an RBI single to make it 8-5 Vermont.
The Bay Sox added one run in the ninth, leading to the 8-6 final.
Reliever Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif. / Eastern Michigan) was very strong in relief. He dealt three and two-thirds innings of relief, allowing one unearned run on just two hits and one walk. He struck out eight.
Vermont pitching recorded a season-high 20 strikeouts in the game, as Leland and Delaplane had New Bedford hitters off balance all night long.
Bay Sox reliever Sean Gustin (Stoneham, Mass. / Holy Cross) took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the summer. Gustin hurled two and two-thirds innings, giving up one earned run on two hits. He struck out two.
The Mountaineers will conclude their four-game home stint on Wednesday night, when they host the Plymouth Pilgrims for a 6:30 p.m. contest at Recreation Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
