Mountaineers Blow past Plymouth, Erase Early 6-0 Hole

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Plymouth Pilgrims, 13-7, in Wednesday night New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Recreation Field.

With the win, Vermont improves to 17-13. Plymouth drops to 11-17.

Trailing 6-0 after one and one half innings, the Mountaineers scored 13 unanswered runs over the next seven frames en route to the victory.

Third baseman Austin Taylor (Friendship, Tenn. / Tennessee Martin) led off the second with a single. Catcher Ridge Smith (Clarksville, Tenn. / Austin Peay) followed with a single of his own to set the stage at first and second with no outs. Two batters later, leftfielder Nick Ruppert (La Mesa, Calif. / Dartmouth) put Vermont on the board when he smacked an RBI double to score Taylor and move Smith to third with one out. Designated hitter Danny Bermudez (Cumming, Ga. / Western Carolina) then grounded out to the right side to score Smith and make it 6-2. Centerfielder Laren Eustace (Batavia, Ill. / Indiana) capped off the scoring in the inning with a single, plating Ruppert to cut the deficit in half, at 6-3.

The Mountaineers scored single runs in the third and the fourth to trail 6-5 before erupting for four in the fifth to take a 9-6 edge.

In the fifth, Smith drew a one out walk. First baseman Joe Dudek (Wall Township, N.J. / Kentucky) followed with a walk before Ruppert hit his second RBI single of the night to provide Vermont with a 7-6 edge. Pinch runner Isaiah Pasteur (Westminster, Md. / Indiana) scored on the play after a throwing error. Two batters later, Eustace singled to score Ruppert and make it 8-6. After stealing second, Eustace scored when rightfielder Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) knocked an RBI single.

After one run in the seventh, Vermont scored three more in the eighth to take a 13-6 advantage. Smith whacked a two RBI single and third baseman Austin Clemons (Louisville, Ky. / Louisville) hit a sacrifice fly to put the game out of reach.

Plymouth added a run in the top of the ninth.

In a total team effort, the Mountaineers scored their 13 runs on 14 hits. Parenty, second baseman Garrett Copeland (Bartlett, Tenn. / Austin Peay), Smith, Ruppert and Eustace each recorded multiple hits in the game.

Vermont reliever Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt. / Norwich) worked three and two-thirds innings of relief and allowed no runs on three hits and one walk. He earned the win to improve to 1-2 on the summer. He struck out three.

Pilgrims' reliever Ryan Johnson (East Falmouth, Mass. / Bryant) took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season. Johnson dealt one and one-third innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks. He struck out two.

The Mountaineers will next play on Friday night, when they travel to New Hampshire for a 6:30 p.m. bout with the Northern Division leading Laconia Muskrats. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
