
Mountaineers split doubleheader

Sanford, Maine - The Vermont Mountaineers split a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) doubleheader with the Sanford Mainers at Goodall Park on Thursday night. The Mountaineers clinched first place and home field advantage in the Northern Division playoffs with a win over Keene on Wednesday night and a Sanford loss to Plymouth. With the split, Sanford locked up the second place spot in the Northern playoffs and a home field edge for at least the first round.
GAME 1
Game one resumed in the top of the fourth inning, with the conclusion of Monday's suspended second game. Sanford held a 3-1 lead at the time and held on for a 3-2 win.
Cody Dube (Keene St.) pitched three innings of relief and earned the win to move to 2-0 on the summer. He allowed one run on one hit and struck out three.
Cam Hatch (St. Edwards) earned his eighth save of the year, pitching a scoreless ninth. He allowed one hit and one walk and struck out two.
Vermont starter Jordan Doyle (St. Petersburg) took the loss, falling to 1-1 on the season. Doyle gave up three earned runs on six hits and one walk. He struck out one.
The only run to score in today's portion of the game came in the Vermont half of the fifth. Brett Charbonneau (Le Moyne) reached on a one out hit by pitch and moved to third on a hit-and-run, when Colin Lyman (Louisville) singled. Charbonneau scored when Nick Solak (Louisville) grounded out to short.
The Mainers victory earned them a second place finish in the North, with still four games to play.
GAME 2
The Mountaineers defeated the Mainers 6-4 in the second game of the doubleheader to take five of six games in the season series.
Vermont scored one run in the first, second, third, sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Lyman led off the first with a single and stole second. After Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) walked, Ian Sagdal (Washington State) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) grounded out to short, scoring Lyman to give Vermont a 1-0 edge.
Charbonneau reached on an error with one out in the third. He advanced to second when Josh Treff (Northeastern) grounded out to short. After Charbonneau reached third on a passed ball, Lyman doubled him home to put the Mountaineers up 2-0.
In the third, Sagdal tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Vigliarolo, making it 3-0.
After Sanford scored one run in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead, the Mountaineers pushed a run across in each of the next three innings.
Vigliarolo doubled to lead off the sixth. Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) followed with a single to set up first and third with no outs. Casey Rodrigue (Indiana) hit a sacrifice fly to score Vigliarolo and knot the game at four.
Lyman had a tremendous game, recording four hits, including a solo blast in the seventh to give Vermont a 5-4 lead and an RBI single in the eighth to make it 6-4 Mountaineers.
Ty Wiest (Columbia) started and went five innings. He allowed four earned runs on four hits and three walks. He struck out six.
Nick Miceli (Wesleyan) got the win to move to 1-0 on the summer. Miceli pitched four innings of relief, allowing no runs on two hits and one walk. He struck out five.
Michael Rescigno (Maryland) took the loss, falling to 0-1 on the season. Rescigno dealt three and two-thirds innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out five.
The Mountaineers wrap up their regular season with a game against the North Adams SteepleCats on Friday night at Joe Wolfe Field. The first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
