Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a 13-inning affair, 5-2, to the Plymouth Pilgrims in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Tuesday night. The loss snaps Vermont's seven-game winning streak.
Plymouth pushed three runs across in the thirteenth inning. John Adams (Boston College) led off with an infield single off Vermont reliever Jared Gesell (UNCW). Gesell then plunked Ryan Xepoleas (George Washington) with a pitch to set up first and second with no outs. Former Mountaineers Thomas Roulis (Dartmouth) followed by grounding into a fielder's choice to make it first and third with one out. Michael Martin (Harvard) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with still just one away. Rob Strader (Louisville) entered the game in relief of Gesell and got the first man he faced, Vin Guglietti (Quinnipiac) to fly out to center. Matt Walsh (Franklin Pierce) came up with the hit of the game, a two out two RBI single to put Plymouth ahead 4-2. The Pilgrims would go on to add one more run in the inning en route to their 5-2 win.
Neither team was able to push across a single run until the seventh inning, when Plymouth finally got to Vermont starter Dan Koger (Alabama-Huntsville). Koger went eight innings, allowing just two earned runs on five hits and one walk. He also struck out one.
Pilgrims' starter, Andrew Grant (UMass) dealt eight innings and gave up no runs on six hits. He walked none and struck out four.
Vermont scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game and send it to extra innings. Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) led off and reached on an error by Plymouth shortstop Josh Ake (Oklahoma). Parenty ended up at second following the throwing error. After Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg) singled for his third hit of the game to set up first and third with no outs, Rob Knightes (St. John's) reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Parenty to score from third to cut the deficit to 2-1. Two batters later, Ryan Donovan (Hofstra) hit a soft ground ball single in the infield to score pinch runner Colin Lyman (Louisville) and tie the game at two.
Plymouth reliever Coulton Lee (Arkansas State) earned the win, allowing no runs on two hits and three walks in three and one-third innings. He struck out one and moved to 3-0 on the season.
Thomas Jankins (Quinnipiac) got the save, giving up just one hit while pitching a scoreless thirteenth.
Gesell took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the summer. He gave up three earned runs on two hits and one walk in two and two-third innings. He struck out three.
The Mountaineers are back in action Wednesday night, when they hit to road to battle the Sanford Mainers at Goodall Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
