NECBL New England Collegiate Baseball League

Vermont Alum Pat Wiese Wins '14 TD Ameritrade Fan's Choice Award

June 24, 2014 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) News Release

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Le Moyne College outfielder and 2013 Vermont alum Pat Wiese was named the 2014 TD Ameritrade Fan's Choice Award Winner, as announced Tuesday morning by the association.

Wiese becomes the second New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) alum in the past three years to earn the prestigious honor; former North Adams alum and Davidson College graduate Drew Gadaire ('11) was voted a winner of the award back in 2012.

Wiese had his playing career cut short following his diagnosis of cancer in his knee following his summer with the Mountaineers in 2013. Before then, though, he appeared in 21 games and was rock-solid for Vermont, batting .306 on 19 hits while scoring 10 runs and swiping six stolen bases. His efforts helped the Mountaineers finish second in the NECBL West Division in 2013.

A three-year starter for Le Moyne, Wiese was named to the Northeast-10 Conference First Team and the ABCA & NCBWA DII All Region team after his junior year, his final season as a player. He led the team in batting average at .333, on-base percentage with .415, hits (59), runs (39) and stolen bases (27).

While he was unable to play on the field this past spring, that didn't stop Wiese from impacting his team, his College and his community. While tackling his own fight with cancer, Wiese, with the help of his family and classmates, formed the Pat Wiese Foundation. The goal of the organization is to help support research of Osteosarcoma as well as cancer patients and their families. Through a number of fundraising activities, which included an inaugural 5K Fun Run and the sale of a limited edition t-shirt, the Foundation has raised over $30,000 in just the first six months.

The Fan's Choice Award goes beyond the stat sheet to honor and recognize college baseball players who are positive role models both on and off the field, exemplifying core values like teamwork and integrity, as well as the drive to win. Over the course of six weeks, finalists competed online for fan votes via Facebook. As the winner, Wiese will be honored at the 2014 TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby in Omaha, Nebraska, on July 3.

For his tireless service, all while receiving his treatments, Pat was deservingly named the 2014 Le Moyne College Athletics J.J. O'Brien Male Senior Athlete of the Year, the most prestigious honor given to a Le Moyne student-athlete. Additionally, the NE-10 Conference has recognized Pat as a finalist for the Northeast-10 Conference Man of the Year award. More importantly, Wiese, an NE-10 All-Academic Team honoree, earned his degree in Communications cum laude with a 3.52 G.P.A.
