
Mountaineers defeat Valley Blue Sox, 5-3

Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Valley Blue Sox, 5-3, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Recreation Field on Friday night. With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 16-10 on the summer and sit just a half game back of the first place Sanford Mainers.
Jim McDade (Millersville) and Adam Picard (UMass) combined to pitch another great game for Vermont. McDade started and got the win to improve to 3-1 on the summer. The right-hander allowed three runs (none earned) on four hits and one walk. He struck out one in seven and two-thirds innings.
Picard came on in relief with two outs in the eighth, picking up the final four outs of the game to earn his second save of the season. He gave up no runs on two hits.
The Mountaineers struck early and often, scoring two runs in the first and third innings. Colin Lyman (Louisville) led off the first by reaching on an error by Valley starter Zach Strecker (Kentucky). Alex Caruso (St. John's) followed by reaching on a fielder's choice to set up first and second with no outs. Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) ripped an RBI single through the left side to score Lyman and give Vermont a 1-0 edge. Caruso came in to score one batter later on an error by shortstop Garrett Black (Ohio). This gave the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead.
In the third, Caruso hit a one out single. Vigliarolo followed with a single to set the stage at first and second with one out. After Blake Tiberi (Louisville) reached on a fielder's choice, he advanced to second on a wild pitch. Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) followed with the hit of the game, a two out, two RBI single to score Caruso and Tiberi and give Vermont a 4-1 lead.
The Mountaineers scored once more in the fourth, when Ben Hall (Alabama-Huntsville) batted an RBI single to center to put Vermont on top 5-1.
Strecker took the loss for the Blue Sox, falling to 1-3 on the season. He gave up five runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk over seven innings of work. He struck out three.
The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday night, when they host the Newport Gulls for a North-South showdown at Recreation Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com. Stowe, Vermont, sponsors the game. The first 250 kids in attendance will receive 2014 Mountaineers baseball card sets.
