Keene Swamp Bats News Release
The Keene Swamp Bats snapped a two-game losing skid on Friday night and in the process snapped the eight game winning streak of their Northern Division rivals, the Sanford Mainers, winning by a score of 2-1.
The Swamp Bats move back to the .500 mark and go to 12-12 on the year, while the Mainers drop to 16-9.
Jarred Mederos (St. John's) and Alex Liquori (Kennesaw State) scored on a costly error by Sanford shortstop Corey Raley (Texas Tech) in the top half of the first inning and those were the only two runs of the night for the Swamp Bats.
The Mainers would get one back in the fifth when Dan Hetzel (Rhode Island) led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.
Alex Robinson (Maryland) started and went the first five innings for Keene, allowing one run on four hits, walking three and striking out five. The southpaw earned the win and is 1-0 on the year.
Matt Clancy (St. John's) came on in relief of Robinson and held Sanford to one hit over the next three innings, walking one and fanning five.
Ben Criscuolo (Southern NH) picked up his third save of the season for the Swamp Bats, working his way through a scoreless ninth inning.
The Mainers would make things interesting in the ninth as Criscuolo hit a pair of batters and there were runners at the corners with two down for leadoff hitter Sam Dexter (Southern Maine). Dexter hit a slow chopper to second base, Keene's Taylor Perez (St. Leo) charged and threw out Dexter with the off-balance throw as he was sliding head first into first base.
Ben Wessel (Rhode Island) was tagged with the loss for Sanford, working five innings and allowing two runs (no earned) on three hits, walking one and striking out five.
The Swamp Bats had just four hits in the game, led by Aubrey McCarty (Vanderbilt) who was 2-3 with a pair of singles.
Keene will travel to North Adams tomorrow night to take on the SteepleCats at 6:30. Dominic Severino (Central Conn State) will be on the hill for the Swamp Bats.
