Valley Blue Sox News Release
MONTPELIER, VT- The Valley Blue Sox dropped a 5-3 contest at Montpelier Recreation Field in Vermont to their longtime division rivals, the Vermont Mountaineers, on July 11.
Valley is now 8-17 on the year.
The bottom of the first was a defensive nightmare for the Blue Sox. Vermont had a runner reach on an error, then the next hitter reached when no one covered second on a fielder's choice. The third hitter singled and the ball was bobbled in left which allowed a run to score, and the following hitter brought in a run on another error to make it 2-0.
However, the tables turned in the third when the Mountaineers center fielder dropped a ball that allowed Storm Wilson to go all the way to third. Bobby Zarubin then came up and hit a grounder to short that scored Wilson; the throw pulled the first baseman off the bag, and though Zarubin was initially called out, the umpires conferred and reversed the call.
In the bottom half, however, the Mountaineers strung two singles together and took advantage of a wild pitch to get second and third before another single plated the two to make it 4-1.
In the fourth, the home squad added more as they strung three straight singles together to make it 5-1.
In the eighth, Wilson reached on another error and Garrett Black doubled to right center to bring him in. A wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Jeremie Fagnan plated Black to make it 5-3.
In the ninth, the Blue Sox got singles from Hazard and Frank Crinella, but left them stranded to end the game.
The Blue Sox return home tomorrow, July 12, to face off against Mariano Rivera III and the Laconia Muskrats for a 6:35 p.m. start; gates open at 5:30 p.m. for Christmas in July, with the first 500 fans through the gates to receive a mystery gift.
The 2014 season will represent the Blue Sox seventh season in the Pioneer Valley, playing at Mackenzie Stadium in Holyoke. The Blue Sox have been a member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL; www.necbl.com ) since 2008. The NECBL is funded in part by Major League Baseball and is comprised of 12 teams throughout all six New England states who recruit the elite athletes and premier pro prospects from around the world.
