Keene, N.H. - Backed by another quality start from left-hander Ryan Davis (Le Moyne), the Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Keene Swamp Bats 7-2 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) play on Friday night. With the win, Vermont improves to 20-10 on the summer.
The Mountaineers erupted for five runs in the third inning to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Adam Picard (UMass) led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. Trey West (Le Moyne) followed with a walk to set up first and second with no outs. After Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move runners to second and third with one out, Nick Solak (Louisville) walked to load the bases. Blake Tiberi (Louisville) and Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg) connected with back-to-back RBI singles to make it 2-0. Solak came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) grounded out to second to score Tiberi and open up a 4-0 lead before Ian Sagdal ripped an RBI single to right to plate Amburgey and make it 5-0 Vermont.
Amburgey added an RBI single in the fourth and Brock smacked an RBI base hit in the sixth to open up a 7-0 Mountaineers advantage.
Eight of the nine Vermont starters reached safely with a base hit or walk in the contest.
The two Keene runs of the game came in the bottom of the seventh inning, when Connor Fitzsimons (Central Connecticut State) hit a two-run homerun off Vermont reliever Robert Strader (Louisville).
Davis got the win for the Mountaineers, improving to 3-1 on the season. Davis pitched six and one-third innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks. He struck out five.
Jack Roberts (Virginia) took the loss for Keene, falling to 0-1 on the summer. He started and lasted two innings, giving up two runs on no hits and five walks. Roberts struck out one.
The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday night, when they host the North Adams SteepleCats in NECBL play at Recreation Field. The opening pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com. The Northfield Savings Bank and VELCO sponsor the game, where the first 150 kids in attendance will receive free MLB baseball cards of former Mountaineers players.
