Errors Doom Blue Sox in 7-0 Loss to Mainers

July 18, 2014 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Valley Blue Sox News Release

HOLYOKE, MA - Seven was an unlucky number for the Blue Sox as they allowed seven unearned in a 7-0 loss to the Sanford Mainers, hitting into a triple play in the seventh inning during the defeat.

Valley falls to 9-21 on the year.

In the second, with two on, an error allowed the runners to score for Sanford. Then in the third, a dropped third strike reached and with two outs another run scored on a single to make it 4-0.

Valley's best chance to score came in the seventh, as they picked up a pair of walks to lead off the frame, but the Mainers turned a triple play to erase the threat.

Then, in the ninth, a pair of walks and a pair of errors allowed three runs to score, with a double bringing in the last two for the 7-0 final.

Valley returns to action tomorrow at home when they host the Laconia Muskrats at 6:35 p.m. on Education and Literacy Night, with the first 300 children in attendance to be given a free book. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and all teachers will be able to attend the game for free with a valid ID; both giveaways are sponsored by Links to Libraries and the Valley Opportunity Council.

The 2014 season will represent the Blue Sox seventh season in the Pioneer Valley, playing at Mackenzie Stadium in Holyoke. The Blue Sox have been a member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL; www.necbl.com) since 2008. The NECBL is funded in part by Major League Baseball and is comprised of 12 teams throughout all six New England states who recruit the elite athletes and premier pro prospects from around the world.
