Keene drops their third straight game, falls 7-2 to Vermont

KEENE, N.H. - The Keene Swamp Bats struggles continued Friday night as they dropped their third straight game, falling 7-2 to the NECBL North Division leading Vermont Mountaineers at Alumni Field.

With the loss, Keene falls to 13-16 and drops a full game out of the final playoff spot in the North Division. With the win, Vermont wins their 20th game of the season improving their record to 20-10 on the season.

The Swamp Bats have lost six of their last eight games.

Walks were a problem for the Swamp Bats as they allowed seven walks in the first two innings.

The Mountaineers started the scoring in the third inning in a big way as they were able to score five runs and sent 10 men to the plate in the frame. Adam Picard (UMass) lead off the inning with a four pitch walk and came around to score on a bases loaded single by Blake Tiberi (Louisville) to give Vermont the 1-0 lead. Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg) then singled on a high infield chopper plating Trey West (Le Moyne). Nick Solak (Louisville) scored the third run of the inning for the Mountaineers on a wild pitch by Sam Triece (Washington State) who came in relief of Swamp Bats starter Jack Roberts (Virginia).

Jones struggled mightily for the Swamp Bats despite not allowing a hit. He gave up two runs (both earned), walked five and struck out just one in just two-plus innings of work on just 39 pitches. He threw just 15 (38 percent) of his pitches for strikes.

The Mountaineers finished the scoring in the third when Ian Sagdal (Washington State) singled to right scoring Amburgey after an RBI ground out by Chandler Brock (Alabama Huntsville) plated Tiberi.

Vermont added another run in the fourth inning when Amburgey drove in Solak with an RBI single to right to make it 6-0 Mountaineers.

In the sixth inning Solak scored his third run of the day when Brock drove him in on an RBI single to right to give Vermont a 7-0 lead. The run was unearned.

The Swamp Bats finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning when Connor Fitzsimons (Central Conn. State) hit his first home run of the year, a two-run shot to left to make it a 7-2 ballgame.

Ryan Davis (Le Moyne) did a terrific job for the Mountaineers on the mound as he went six and a third innings pitched, gave up one run (earned) on four hits, walked two and struck out five on 94 pitches of work.

The Swamp Bats will try to snap their three game losing streak tomorrow night as they host the Sanford Mainers at Alumni Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.
