Rio Grande Valley Dorados News Release

HIDALGO, TX: July 6, 2004 – The arenafootball2 (af2) awarded its weekly player of the week honors today and defensive specialist Eddie Moten was honored as the ADT Defensive Player of the Week, as he helped the Dorados break their seven-game winless streak Saturday night with a 49-34 win over the Wichita Stealth.

Moten, a 5-10 185-pound rookie out of Texas A&M University-Kingsville, has been a major impact since joining the Dorados. He joined the Dorados on May 15th in Central Valley and through seven games he already leads the team with 5 interceptions, co-leads the team in solo-tackles and is ranked second in assists (13) and total tackles with 32. Saturday, Moten garnered 2 interceptions totaling 41 yards in return yardage and contributed 5.5 tackles (4 solo) and 2 pass defections. Moten joins Karleton Thomas as the only Dorados league-wide award winners this season.

The Rio Grande Valley Dorados (4-8) are currently getting ready for their next contest this Saturday night, as the Dorados remain home at the Dodge Arena and host the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz. The contest is the final meeting of the season between the two teams and will decide the season series, which is currently split at 1-1. Oklahoma City opened the series on April 10th with a 55-17 win in Oklahoma, which is the biggest loss for the Dorados this season. The Dorados revenged the loss in the following game with a 44-41 win at the Dodge Arena on a game the af2 highlighted as one of the top games in league history. Karleton Thomas blocked the game-tying field goal attempt as time expired to seal the win after a big goal-to-go stand by the Dorados defense. The Yard Dawgz are 9-4 coming into the contest and are coming off of a huge 69-35 home win over Central Valley. Kris Peters led the way offensively in the contest with 115 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns. The ‘Dawgz are 2-4 this season on the road. The contest also features an intriguing match-up in the trenches. Dorados Lineman Spencer Conley is the all-time active sacks leader in the af2 and leads the league with 8.5 sacks, and he will be matched up with Oklahoma City's James Landers, who is ranked second in the af2 with 8 sacks. Saturday's contest will be televised live on Televisa's XERV Channel 9 (19-cable) with Chris Due, Dennis Scott and Jeffrey Salcedo providing the action. It will also be carried over the radio and internet airwaves courtesy of ESPN Radio 1240 AM and MyRGV.COM with Josh Bogorad doing the play-by-play honors.

Another feature in Saturday night's game will be the halftime, which will feature a fierce flag football contest between BMP Radio and Clear Channel Radio over station bragging rights. The event, which is sponsored by Budweiser and Valley Yamaha, will feature some of the top names in local radio battling it out in a grueling five minute exhibition.

"It is indeed an honor to being playing on the same field as the Dorados, but it's really sad thou that the level of competition wouldn't be as great from the folks at BMP Radio, said Clear Channel's Billy Santiago. "We are looking for a tough defense game but we should prevail at the end. If we score at least a touchdown it would be a great accomplishment or maybe even get a first down."

BMP Radio is not intimidated at all by the words of Santiago and responded with the following prepared statement: "As you well know, BMP Radio is known for its aggressive style of successful, innovative and exciting radio. Once again, BMP Radio is called upon to show this to thousands in attendance and to the millions watching around the world. Halftime...Dodge Arena... The fury will be released."

The BudZone FanZone tailgating area outside the Dodge Arena will also be in full-swing before the game, as tailgaters are encouraged to bring their grills and food and join in on the Hamburger Cookout Contest. Fun and games for the children will also be provided by Fun in the Sun. Tailgating begins at 4PM on Saturday and is made possible by Budweiser (L&F Distributors) and Clear Channel Stations.

Individual tickets are currently on sale for the Saturday night battle against Oklahoma City and may be purchased by stopping by the Dodge Arena offices (2600 N. 10th St. in Hidalgo, Tx) or ordering by phone at 956-843-7825.
