Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits (71-58) battled back from back-to-back losses on Monday and Tuesday, and an early deficit on Wednesday, and took down the Chattanooga Lookouts (59-67), 3-2, at Riverwalk Stadium to force a rubber match on Thursday. The win, coupled with the Tennessee Smokies loss to the Jackson Generals, means the Biscuits now lead the Second Half North Division standings by five games with 11 to play in the regular season.
Benton Moss (7-5), who saw his team-leading 23 consecutive-scoreless innings streak come to an end in his most recent start at Jackson entering Wednesday night, fell behind early, serving up an opposite-field two-run home run to Lookouts right fielder Jaylin Davis in the first. Moss was superb after that, however, firing in eight frames of two-run ball, with the Davis blast being the lone blemish on the night for the right-hander.
Clark Beeker was making his Double-A debut on the mound for Chattanooga and took a perfect game into the fourth before a Nathan Lukes single broke it up. Anthony Marzi took over for Beeker in the fifth, and the Biscuits finally opened the scoring with a Miles Mastrobuoni RBI-single that cut the Chattanooga lead to one. The RBI was Mastrobuoni's first of his Double-A career.
Marzi worked a scoreless sixth, and Tyler Jay (3-5) a scoreless seventh, but then in the eighth, Jay surrendered a lead-off single to Jake Cronenworth and then plunked Lucius Fox on a 2-2 offering after the switch-hitter fouled off a handful of pitches. With runners at first and second, Lukes then put a sacrifice bunt down, but Jay threw it too high to a covering second baseman Alex Perez at first, which brought home Cronenworth to tie the game at two. Fox was thrown out at home by Davis trying to score on the same play, as Lukes smartly scampered all the way to third.
The next batter was Brett Sullivan, and Jay's first pitch to him was a wild one that scored Lukes and gave the Biscuits a 3-2 lead. Yoel Espinal was then summoned from the bullpen in the ninth, and slammed the door on the Lookouts for his eighth save of the year.
The Biscuits will try to win the series finale and rubber match on Thursday with Forrest Snow (NR) scheduled to make his Butter and Blue debut against Sean Poppen (5-6) at 6:35 PM CT when it will be Alabama State vs. Tuskegee Night with a T-Shirt giveaway.
The rest of the current 10-game home stand includes the Tennessee Smokies coming into the Capital City for Troy University and Community Night with MAX Fireworks on August 24. Alabama/Auburn Night, presented by 95.1 The Fox, and MAX Fireworks is on Saturday, August 25. AUM Night, featuring a 2019 Schedule Poster Giveaway, will be Sunday, August 26, and then the series concludes with Fan Appreciation Night on Tuesday, August 28.
