Mississippi Braves News Release

MOBILE, AL - At last the Mississippi Braves (30-25, 59-66) and Mobile BayBears (25-31, 62-62) had sunshine to play underneath on Wednesday at Hank Aaron Stadium as the clubs split two games to open the abbreviated four-game set. Mobile took Tuesday's suspended game 6-4 and Mississippi used a five-run first inning to win the nightcap, 7-2.

The win in game two and another loss by Pensacola places the M-Braves just 2.0 game behind first-place Biloxi and 1.5 games behind second-place Pensacola with 13 games remaining in the regular season.

Tuesday's suspended game was picked up in the top of the fifth inning. Cristian Pache had just homered to pull the M-Braves within a run at 4-3 before rain halted play. Mobile summoned reliever Jeremy Beasley (W, 3-3) to take over for their starter Jesus Castillo. Beasley gave up just one run the rest of the way to earn the win.

Mobile pushed their advantage to 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning on RBI singles from Roberto Baldoquin and Connor Justus against M-Braves reliever Elian Leyva.

Mississippi threatened in the seventh after an RBI triple by Alejandro Salazar brought home Daniel Lockhart to cut the lead to 6-4. Beasley retired Tyler Neslony on a fly out to end the game.

M-Braves starter Ian Anderson (L, 0-1) retired the first six batters faced on Tuesday but ran into trouble in the third inning. In his first Double-A decision, Anderson gave up four runs on five hits over 2.2 innings with two walks and three strikeouts.

Ricardo Sanchez (W, 2-4) started game two for Mississippi and was immediately handed a 5-0 lead. The M-Braves scored five runs on five hits in the top of the first. BayBears starter Matt Ball (L, 1-1) struck out the first batter and then allowed the next six to reach. Tyler Marlette, Luis Valenzuela, and Jonathan Morales (2) recorded RBI singles to place the Braves up 4-0. Lockhart brought in the fifth run of the inning on a fielders choice. The Braves made it 6-0 after an RBI single from Valenzuela in the third inning. The 24-year-old finished 3-for-4 - his team-leading 25th multi-hit game of the season.

Sanchez didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning and retired the first 10 in a row. 19-year-old Jo Adell doubled down the left field line with one out and then scored, breaking up the shutout on a single from Mitch Ghelfi. The BayBears scored an unearned run against the 21-year-old lefty Sanchez in the fifth inning to make it 6-2.

Pache reached on a sharply struck fielding error on Mobile second baseman Jahmai Jones allowing Valenzuela to score his second run of the game and it was 7-2.

The M-Braves and Mobile BayBears will play another doubleheader on Thursday at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile to conclude the series. RHP Enderson Franco (5-8, 4.16) will start game one for Mississippi and a to be determined starter will take the mound in game two. Mobile will start LHP Patrick Sandoval (0-0, 0.00) in game one and RHP Jose Rodriguez (7-9, 6.07) in game two.
