Victoria Seals News Release
Calgary, AB - Still searching for their first road win of the 2010 season, the Victoria Seals travelled across the Rockies to open up a two-game set against the Calgary Vipers on Saturday night. In a battle of respective aces, the Seals turned to Jason Kershner (1-2) for the start while the Vipers countered with Jay Broughton (2-1).
After a pair of scoreless innings to open the game, Calgary jumped onto the board first in the bottom of the third. A lead-off double from Jonny Kaplan, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Broughton cashed in with the help of an RBI groundout from Guillermo Reyes for a 1-0 Vipers lead.
Stretching their lead to three in the fifth, Reyes proved to be the key to the offense once again, dropping in a two-run double to score Luis Taveras and Kaplan for a 3-0 advantage.
Answering right back in the top of the sixth, the Seals finally found the big inning they were looking for on the road. With Chris Van Rossum drawing a walk to start the frame, a sacrifice bunt from Kershner along with a walk to Wilver Perez on either side of a base hit from Dale Swinford gave Calgary-native Colin Moro the chance to drive in a pair with a bloop double to right.
After an RBI groundout off the bat of Terrence McClain, Brian Rios gave the Seals the lead with an RBI single of his own for a 4-3 Victoria score. Adding another run in the top of the seventh, a base hit from Shane Cronin along with an RBI single from Swinford put the visitors up by two.
Padding their advantage once more in the eighth inning, a walk to Moro set up singles from both McClain and Rios, and after Josh Arhart walked to load the bases, a sacrifice fly courtesy of Cronin made it a 7-3 Seals lead.
After an RBI single from Jorge Mejia pulled the Vipers back within two in the bottom of the eighth, Moro factored into the scoring again with his second hit of the game, scoring Swinford to put Victoria up 8-5.
Despite a solo home run from lead-off batter Drew Miller in the bottom of the ninth, closer Brandon Villafuerte was able to hold off the Vipers and polish off an 8-6 Seals win, snapping a franchise-record 10 game losing streak.
Jason Kershner evened his record on the season with the victory, while Jay Broughton fell to 2-2 with the loss. Guillermo Reyes posted four RBI's in a losing effort for the Vipers, while Colin led the way for Victoria with a 2-for-4 outing and a pair of runs batted in.
The second game of this series from Foothills Stadium is slated for tomorrow afternoon, a 12:30 p.m. (PT) start time against the Vipers. The contest will broadcast live via www.victoriaseals.ca. Both single game and season tickets for the 2010 campaign are now on sale, available through the Victoria Seals office. Call (250) 220-7777 for more information, or to book your seat today!
