Mooseheads and Screaming Eagles introduce the Hurley Cup Wednesday, December 7th 2016
The Halifax Mooseheads and Cape Breton Screaming Eagles are proud to be taking the annual Battle of Nova Scotia to new heights this holiday season.
Today the long-time rivals announced details of the first ever Hurley Cup (see attached picture), which not only honours the rich history of the game but will serve as a symbol of superiority between Nova Scotia's major junior hockey teams.
The Irish field game of Hurley was first taken to the ice by the boys of King's College School in Windsor, Nova Scotia around 1800 and over a period of decades adapted into what became known as hockey. Windsor has since widely been adopted as the birthplace of hockey.
The winner of the annual holiday series will be decided on aggregate scoring. Goals scored in the opponents building will serve as the first tie-breaker. The Mooseheads and Screaming Eagles will continue to wear their special Battle of Nova Scotia jerseys which will again be raffled off to fans at the game. Fans who bring a food bank donation to the game in support of Feed Nova Scotia will receive a ballot to win one of the game-worn jerseys.
Aside from winning the inaugural Hurley Cup and keeping possession for 2017, the winning team will also be outfitted in Under Armour Hurley Cup Champion attire.
Cape Breton will host the opening game of the series on Friday, December 30th at 7pm Centre 200. Tickets are available online at Tickets.CapeBreton.ca, in person at the Centre 200 box office or by phone 902-564-2200.
Halifax is home in the finale of the Hurley Cup on New Year's Eve, Saturday, December 31st at 2pm at Scotiabank Centre. Tickets are available now at the Ticket Atlantic Box Office at Scotiabank Centre, select Superstore Outlets, TicketAtlantic.com or by phone at 902-451-1221.
