Manitoba Moose News Release

Following two home victories over the Marlies this season, the Moose dropped a 3-2 shootout decision to the Toronto club at the Ricoh Coliseum on Saturday night. Raymond Sawada earned both Moose goals in regulation time and was the only sniper to break James Reimer in the shootout. Reimer earned his first professional win in his first professional game against the visiting Moose, while Karl Goehring stopped 26 attempts in his eighth consecutive start.

James Reimer made his professional debut backstopping the Toronto Marlies on Saturday night, while Karl Goehring started in his eighth consecutive game for the visiting Moose.

Back-to-back Marlies penalties, for hooking and boarding, put the Moose on a two-man advantage for 1:28. Toronto's penalty killers cleared the puck on three separate occasions and killed off the powerplay unscathed.

Toronto benefited from their first powerplay at 12:28 when Maxime Fortunus was fined for hooking. It only took the home team 42 seconds into the five-on-four to capitalize, when Darryl Boyce smacked the puck passed Goehring to put the Marlies on top by one.

The Moose started the second period on their fourth powerplay of the night. Hungry to break their goose-egg, the Moose registered two shots in the two minutes, but Reimer kept his net clean by blocking all opposing opportunities.

At 5:54, Darryl Boyce put the visitors back on the powerplay when he was reprimanded for tripping, followed by a roughing call to Phil Oreskovic. On their second five-on-three of the night, the Moose were able to break the 10 shot mark, but were unable to thump Reimer to knot the game.

Zack FitzGerald and Phil Oreskovic dropped their gloves and circled each other near centre ice at 14:11. After the first blow, both attackers lost their balance and fell to the ice before they were handed five-minute fighting majors.

On the Moose's seventh powerplay, Raymond Sawada made a mark on the scoreboard, when he snapped the puck into the mesh to earn his first goal of the season and tie the game at one.

A short 1:27 into the final frame saw the Marlies regain the lead when Phil Orsekovic scored an unassisted goal to put the home team up 2-1.

The Marlies handed over their ninth powerplay to the Moose near the mid-way point of the third. With help from veterans Mark Cullen and Nolan Baumgartner, Raymond Sawada earned his second of the night and second of the season to tie the game at two to force overtime.

Overtime

The Moose and Marlies both had quality scoring chances during the five-minute overtime, but neither team hit the back of the net and the Moose were forced into a shootout for the third time this season.
