Moose Beat Marlies on Late Goal
February 27, 2019 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose (26-25-3-2) got a late goal to top the Toronto Marlies (29-19-6-3) by a 3-2 score Wednesday afternoon at Coca-Cola Coliseum. The Moose opened the scoring seven minutes into the first when Seth Griffith picked the far corner on Michael Hutchinson for a power play tally. Manitoba made it 2-0 at 10:46 as Marko Dano created a turnover on the forecheck, then had his centering feed redirect into the net off a defender. Toronto got one back with 5:46 to go in the period courtesy of a Dmytro Timashov wrister that beat a screened Eric Comrie. The Moose outshot the Marlies 14-8 as they took a 2-1 lead to the first intermission.
Toronto pulled even 4:28 into the second frame as Adam Brooks tapped in a Jeremy Bracco pass from the half-wall on the power play. The Marlies grabbed the momentum from there, but Comrie held the hosts off the board for the remainder of the period. The Moose got on the attack in the late stages of the second, including a power play with a couple minutes left, but Hutchinson made 11 stops to keep the game tied 2-2 heading to the third.
The contest looked to be headed for overtime through a tight-checking third period. The teams combined for just 14 shots through the first 19 minutes of the frame. There was one more shot on goal in the final minute, and it went to Manitoba. Jansen Harkins drove toward the Toronto net and slid the puck out front where it redirected off Michael Spacek to Griffith. The former Marlies forward snapped the puck into the goal, with 34 seconds left, for his second tally of the game and a 3-2 Moose lead. The Marlies weren't able to generate a tying goal in the final moments as the Moose came away with a crucial two points.
