Jackson Generals News Release
JACKSON, TENN. (MAY 19, 2014) - The Generals (18-26) lost their sixth consecutive series as the Montgomery Biscuits (24-20) took the rubber game of the five-game series 11-9 on Monday at the Ballpark in Jackson. The only scoreless inning was the ninth in the sea-saw battle that saw three ties and three lead changes. The Generals fell despite a 4-for-4 day, with three doubles from centerfielder Leon Landry.
The nine-game rain-shortened homestand ended with Jackson going 3-6 and seeing 133 total runs being scored.
Ryan Brett led off the game with a single and came around to score on Luke Maile's single to make the score 1-0 Biscuits. Montgomery increased their lead to 2-0 in the second when Jake Hager singled to score Riccio Torrez.
Jackson got one run back in the third when Jack Marder (0x2, 2 R, 2 BB) led off with a walk and came around to score on a passed ball. The lead was cut in half to 2-1, but the scoring was not done yet.
Joey Rickard started the fourth with a home run to left for the Biscuits to increase the lead to 3-1.
The Generals tied the score in the bottom half of the inning. With two on and one out John Hicks (2x3, R, RBI, BB) singled and Dan Paolini (2x4, R, RBI, BB) came around to score while Patrick Kivlehan (0x4, R, BB) advanced to third. Then, with Mickey Wiswall (2x4, R, RBI) at the plate, Hicks attempted to steal second. Hicks was caught in a run-down, but was able to get back to first safely when Brett dropped the ball and Paolini scored the third run of the game for Jackson. The score was 3-3 after four innings.
Montgomery retook the lead in the fifth with a 2-RBI triple from Torrez. The Generals picked up an RBI double from Paolini in the bottom half of the inning and the lead was cut back to one at 5-4 after the fifth.
In the top of the sixth the Biscuits increased their lead again, this time on a homer from Richie Shaffer. But Jackson came back and took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the inning when Dario Pizzano (1x4, 2 R, BB) scored on a wild pitch and Leon Landry (4x4, R, 2 RBI) doubled home two more runs to make the score 7-6 Generals.
Four walks in the top of the seventh by Jackson reliever Richard Vargas (0-0, 4.64) led to three more runs crossing the plate for the Biscuits. Jackson picked up two of those runs back in the bottom of the inning as Wiswall singled home Pizzano and Hicks scored on a wild pitch. That tied the game 9-9 as the teams headed to the eighth inning.
Maile walked and Argo singled to lead off the eighth for the Biscuits. They both scored on Malm's double as he was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple. The lead ballooned to the winning margin of 11-9.
Neither starting pitching factored in the decision. Former University of Tennessee pitcher Matt Ramsey (1-0, 2.08) earned his first win of the season and another Tennessee native Nick Hill (0-1, 16.88) picked up the loss for the Generals.
Landry led the way for Jackson going 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Hicks improved his on-base streak to 19 games with a single in the second inning. The hit also extended his hitting streak to nine games as he finished with two singles, an RBI, a walk and he scored a run. Wiswall and Paolini also added two hits each as the Generals had 11 hits in the game.
The Generals are off on Tuesday as they travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to take on the Jacksonville Suns at Bragan Field. The teams will play a five-game series beginning Wednesday. The Generals will start Tyler Olson (1-1, 5.06) and Jose Urena (4-2, 4.87) will be on the bump for the Suns. The game Wednesday is scheduled to start at 6:05 pm and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
